Of course you don't want your son hurt, but I think on some level once you knew the kind of hurt and that he was ok it was easier than him being in trouble again. I doubt your first thought was I hope he's hurt and not in trouble. It sounds reactionary- after the fact when you knew he was ok.

This is me every time school calls, so I totally get it. DS1 has had some behavioral issues at school, and while I hate when I get the call that he's sick, I'd rather it than that he's in trouble. I think it's b/c being sick or injured seems like it's random, while him being in trouble feels like it's somehow my fault and that I'm a bad parent.

I practically jumped for joy on Monday when the gym daycare worker pulled me aside to tell me that my son had been hit by another child, rather than being the hitter. I totally get it.
