10 months to the day after moving in with us and 1,268 days after being in foster care Jr was adopted. He wanted to change his middle name, after we talked him out of changing his first name. I was very touched that after vetoing a lot of his suggestions like Batman or Cubby that he finally chose my dad’s name as his middle name
The finalization yesterday was a blur, similar to my wedding day except I wasn’t in tears during the hearing yesterday. I was worried that we would have a melt down of some sort but thankfully that didn’t happen. He was mostly smiles during the day. We hired a photographer to document the day as I wanted to focus on the events themselves and not documenting the day.
During the hearing we were asked a number of questions such as how has it been, are you prepared to be his parents, do you realize he has the same rights as a biological child, and others that I don’t remember. While I was answering questions junior kept trying to take the microphone and talk, he was told he would have his chance later. He then got distracted by a box of toys in the corner and wandered off to play. In the end when he was given a chance to speak he got shy and didn’t want to say anything.
It was touching to hear his previous foster mom, his GAL and caseworker talk about how different he is now than a year ago. He seems more relaxed and happy.
After the ceremony we had a pool party with pizza to celebrate. Junior drew the picture on the top of the cake I love that he is riding the dog and Dad is wearing his Steelers jersey.
Thank you all so much for your support during this entire journey
At lunch jr got all excited and said “We are moving to Seattle.” I think there was a part of him that thought that we would leave without him and it wasn’t until the finalization that he truly believed that he is forever a part of this family.
OMG so excited for you! You're taking me back to our finalization day. I cried like a baby. It sort of breaks my heart that he thought you'd go to Seattle without him, I'm so glad he feels so confident about his place in your family.
I love that you had a cool party after and I LOVE the cake! What a cool idea.
