I see Mamie is on the hipster list. DH & I came very close to naming our child (DD3) this. We both have relatives named this & have always liked it. Now I'm half wondering why we didn't & half glad we didn't as to not be lumped in with hipsters. lol.
I like the name Magnus. It was a contender for our son, but we went with Malcolm instead. It's a strong name. I say go for it if you like it! I wouldn't think it was strange in the US.
I don't find it hipster, but it certainly isn't American sounding. I know of several Norwegian Magnus. It is a good strong name. Anais is really popular in France, I think it's lovely. Many of those names are really popular right now outside the U.S., for me I would assume that the parents traveled a lot or had a connection to another country, not that they were hipsters.

I love it but I tend to love a lot of Scandinavian names. Axel is a favorite of mine too. We would never name our kid Magnus though since DH would never go for it.
I know at least one under-8 of almost every name on this list. I was going to bold them, but its easier to say I don't know a Salinger or a Butch or an Orson or Otto or Monty or Pandora or Elvis or Gulliver or Romy or Roscoe or Hopper or Homer or Leopold (but do know a few Leo's). I know multiple Oscar's, Ruby's, Hazel's and Nico's (although Nico is the going Spanish nn for Nicolás).
I am surprised that Holden and Flannery didn't make this list.
Oh, and to OP, I would go for it if you love it, but I clearly don't care whether people think my DS's name is "too ethnic."
People scrunched up their noses when I was deciding between Sebastian & Felix bc paired w my last name, "people would know right away that he's Hispanic!!" Um. He is half Puerto Rican... I didn't realize I was trying to hide that? I could have named him James and our last name would give it away.

Ugh, I scrunch up my nose at their comment.
And I like 34 names on the hipster list, and know many kids with those names. I used to nanny for a Leopold.
