After I saw someone post these on Facebook yesterday, I went to the Target FB page and the trolling was strong in the Posts by Others area. I may have wasted way too much time there reading all the posts.
At the risk of veering this thread off course, have you ever taken a look at the Posts by Others section of the Gerber FB page? It's nothing but parents posting pictures of their kids with captions like "I'm ready for my commercial!"
I really enjoyed all the ones saying they would take their business to Wal-Mart... Because Wal-Mart did this exact same thing like 3 years ago?
Maybe Hobby Lobby can help them out. Fill the gap. That seems like a good place for every piece of merchandise to be assigned a gender. I can see it:
boy baby shower aisle /girl baby shower aisle Men's fabric section/Women's fabric section stamps for boys (like block letter alphabet) and stamps for girls (like cursive alphabet) DIY models for boys/DIY models for girls
SEPARATE BUT EQUAL
Maybe we just need 2 Hobby Lobby stores -- one with a pink sign and one with a blue sign and the Internet can vote on which store each new product should go in. Get a debate going about if serif fonts are too girly.
Someone explain that to me. Why those colors? I'm having a crisis here.
It wasn't always that way, in fact the exact opposite was recommended because pink is a stronger bolder color (the pastel version of red). Interesting history on the gender association of color. link
I just read that this went on for 16 hours before Target stopped it.
I kind of think they could have stopped it sooner, but they liked what the troll was saying.
I told my husband I'd have a hard time deciding what to do with all those posts if I were the Social Media Manager for Target. On the one hand, you don't want people thinking your company calls people dicks, even if it's true. On the other, I would have wanted to say all those things, so I would have wanted to leave them up and say, "Wasn't us!"
As a social media manager I can't tell you how much I love this. And how much I don't envy the actual Target social media team. I had someone throw scripture at me recently to say we were doing something dumb and it took all I had not to be like "are you freaking serious?" lol
And it's killing me that people didn't realize this wasn't actually Target. How stupid are people? Wait, nevermind - these are people enraged over signage going away, so pretty stupid.

My favorite were the people who actually thought Target was moving to unisex bathrooms and the guy who contacted the local news about it

Well Target clearly is being run by crazy people now, so can't be too careful.
According comments on FB some people believe the toy section at Target will now look like this and take FOREVER to find what they want and they do not have time for that:
Plus I must be clueless b/c I didn't think anyone would care about bedding and toys being gender neutral it seemed like a non-issue. Nobody was on Lowe's website the other day complaining about the manager who replaced a black driver with a white one b/c a customer had a racist request, but, "OMG, Target did something PC (which is now a terrible, evil ideal)! Jump on FB and bitch-it-up!"

Even here it's pretty damned easy to see which toys are marketed to girls.

This is pretty much what the kids shoe section already looks like at my local Target.
I sent DH the article about it last night and he couldn't stop laughing for like an hour.
Mine too. Then I showed him the troll thing and he didn't get it. Apparently he was unfamiliar with the concept of "trolling." This is probably because he does not spend an embarrassing amount of time on the internet.
