I got a brand new kenmore french door with bottom freezer refrigerator 2.75 years ago. It was a black friday doorbuster so I got it for $999 but it was like a $1500 fridge. In fact, it is retailing now for around $1400 from Sears.
I came home from vacation yesterday and noticed my ice cream was melted. That is weird...why does it say my freezer is 33 degrees? My fridge temp appears mostly OK at 41 degrees (even though its set for 39).
Anyway, repair guy comes and he is like yup, its your compressor. A new one will be $900. WTF?! This thing is not even three years old but only has a one year warranty.
I soooo did not want to hear this. We are replacing our 25+ year old appliances and hearing that we're not going to get the longevity out of them, regardless of what we pay, is disheartening.

well, all I can say is don't buy a GE Cafe refridgerator. I think ours is from 2013 (when sellers re-did our kitchen) and it's a complete POS. It freezes half my food in the fridge, but the freezer never seems cold. #nothelpfulthanks

We called sears repair on dish washer and they offered us the extended warranty for the price it would have been if we bought the dishwasher. If the repair was more than the price of the dishwasher they would give us a gift card for the amount of a new one or they repaired it free. My husband was an employee at the time so I don't know if that is standard.
I wouldn't get a GE either. I have one that is about 6 years old. The water line keeps freezing in the freezer and the repairman said it's a known issue, they offered a limited recall and now they aren't fixing them under the recall and the only way to fix it is a new freezer door which is $390 and they're on backorder and he's 99% sure they aren't making any more.

That's so frustrating. I want to buy a new refrigerator because mine has a bad layout and is small, but it works well. It's also from 1987 and ugly. Hard to stomach a new one that may not last.

So the repair guy said its the compressor, and that while the regular warranty is only 1 year, the "sealed refrigeration components" which includes the compressor are 5 years. So we called the Sears Home repair people and they are sending someone out on Monday to look at it. The repair guy who came out first said to push them on the warranty because they will try to weasel out of it.
So basically I have to toss everything in my freezer, right? Its at 33 degrees, the ice cubes were water in the dispenser, and the ice cream was melted.
But fridge OK? Which is good news because I didn't realize the fridge might have an issue until I spent $100 on groceries at Whole Foods last night.
I will be SOOO beyond livid if they won't fix it and I have to replace a fridge that isn't even 3 years old.

I would cook up what I can and freeze it if you have access to another freezer. The only thing I might be kind of iffy about would be ground meat. A lot depends upon exactly how thawed the contents are. For instance, if you have ice chunks inside some of the meat, your freezer likely only went down 2-3 days ago and you should be good.
We have a Whirlpool refrigerator that we purchase around the same time and had the same problem. When we called to get it repaired we found out that it is a known compressor problem with this particular model and they fixed it for free. The repair didn't work so they had to send us a brand new refrigerator free of charge. I was frustrated about having to throw out my food but it was nice that I got a newer model even though I didn't have a warranty. I did purchase a 5-year warranty (plus the one-year already included) on the new model because it seemed worth it after the trouble with the first one. The warranty I purchased was $250 but would cover $300 in food loss if it breaks and covers the repairs.

I was gone for a week on vacation. All the stuff I had in there was meals that were prepared and frozen from Dream Dinners plus ice cream and ice. I don't have another freezer so no where to put it. The freezer is still saying 33 degrees today.
