How is it on your parts? I put it on after I pumped. It wasn't there 3 hrs later when I pumped again.
I did Medela brand lanolin. The other one (in purple bottle, can't remember name) is super thick. I had to use it for the first 8 weeks or so.
If you apply it before you pump it reduces the friction which then reduces nipple discomfort. I definitely noticed some discomfort on days I didn't use it before pumping.
I applied nipple butter before I pumped, then used a burp cloth to wipe it off the parts when I was done. Nipple butter has a consistency of butter so it was easy to wipe off the flange. I had an extra tube of lanolin in my bag for back ups. It worked too but it is thick like Aquaphor so it would definitely annoying to wipe off.

I had Lanisoh samples from the hospital and EMAB and I really didn't prefer one over the other. I also applied it before pumping to reduce friction. I got tired of the mess though, I was getting little oily spots on my couch, my bras, shirts so I just stopped using it altogether.

Motherlove. Hands down the best. I have earth mamas I bought while waiting for my new jar of motherlove (two day shipping didn't save my procrastination) and it's just not as good.
