ALDEN, Iowa -- GOP presidential hopeful Carly Fiorina said Thursday that parents should not be forced to vaccinate their children against diseases like measles and mumps, although she added that public school systems can forbid unvaccinated children from attending.
"When in doubt, it is always the parent's choice," Fiorina said during a town hall in an agricultural building in rural Iowa on Thursday evening. "When in doubt, it must always be the parent's choice."
Fiorina's comment came in response to a question from a mother of five children who said that because of her religious beliefs, she will not allow her children to receive any vaccines that were created using cells from "aborted babies." Fiorina told the woman that parents must be allowed to make such decisions.
"We must protect religious liberty and someone's ability to practice their religion," said Fiorina, receiving a round of applause. "We must devote energy and resources to doing so. Period."
Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard who has never held elected office, recounted a discussion she had with her daughter, who was hesitant to have her own daughter vaccinated against the sexually transmitted disease HPV.
"And she got bullied. She got bullied by a school nurse saying: 'Do you know what your daughter is doing?'" Fiorina said. She said her daughter's response was this: "Yes. I do, actually."
After the town hall, Fiorina further explained her stance on vaccinations to a group of reporters: "When you have highly communicable diseases where we have a vaccine that's proven, like measles or mumps, then I think a parent can make that choice -- but then I think a school district is well within their rights to say: 'I'm sorry, your child cannot then attend public school.' So a parent has to make that trade-off."
Fiorina said that when it comes to "these more esoteric immunizations" for diseases that are not contagious or communicable, school districts should not be allowed to mandate that children receive the vaccination.

So she supports the law....?
I'm impressed. This is some good legerdemain going on here. Politician level: Advanced.

This is the same woman who says we should elect her because she was the CEO of a company....that laid off 30,000 people and lost 60% of its value during her tenure. Because she knows how to...create jobs? Run things successfully?

I don't know what this word means. I'd look it up, but I don't have a dictionary.
For the most part, I can laugh at this election because I really don't think any of these clowns have a chance at winning but she has given me full rage two days in a row.
I am just so tired of the stupid pandering. And I don't mean pandering is stupid by that. I mean pandering with actual stupid statements that people know better about. But say it anyway because it's what a loud group of idiots want to hear. I am convinced that many of them know exactly how asinine the things they are saying are but they don't care or apparently are stupid enough to think this is going to win them anything but becoming the leader of a bunch of dumbasses.
So she doesn't think kids should have to get vaccines for diseases that "are not contagious or communicable." Which vaccines are those, Carly?
I'm interested in this too. I'm pretty sure the only one that actually fits this category is tetanus, yet I'm also pretty sure she's referring to HPV here because *obvioisly* teenagers don't have sex, at least not the "good" ones.

Isn't that the position of the majority of this board?

Yes but this:

is not.
I thought most on this board agreed it is always the parents' choice, while acknowledging that they disagreed with that choice. Why are we okay with taking away choice re: vaccines but not taking away choice re: abortion?
I in no way agree with the choice not to vaccinate. My son sees a pedi practice that won't take non-vaxxers, or even anyone who wants a delayed schedule. But I don't agree with taking away a parent's choice.

Abortion is about making choices about your own body. You can't outlaw abortion without necessarily relegating pregnant women to a lesser-citizen status.
Vaccination laws are about protecting public health. You don't get the choice to infect an entire community with measles. The whole 'your right to swing your fist ends at my nose' thing.
I also strongly disagree with "when in doubt, it's the parent's choice." As if parents are always and necessarily right.

It must suck to actually not believe the same as people you are trying to get votes from. I mean she is disagreeing in the most agreeable way so it doesn't sound like she's disagreeing. How tiresome to always have to do that.
