We'll be staying about halfway between Greenbelt and Chevy Chase MD. We have relatively easy access to the metro green line from where we're staying, and we'll have a rental car.
I use forearm crutches, and we'll probably bring a wheelchair. Is the metro a viable option for me? We don't have public transportation where I live, so I've never used any. When we go into DC, would the metro or rental car probably be a better option?
We have five days (including Saturday and Sunday) between my doctors appointments.
I'm looking for recommendations for places to eat and things to see. I love art. My H is an engineer (and that's his obsession and hobby). I know I want to go back to the national gallery of art.
And if anyone has recommendations for quilt or needlework stores, I'd be thrilled.
I'm not a local, but I go to DC once in a while for work.
I really enjoyed the National Portrait Gallery on my last trip. They had the Athenaeum portraits of Martha and George Washington done by Gilbert Stuart, and the Lansdowne portrait as well, which were very cool to see in person. I think they swap back and forth between Boston and D.C. so I'm glad I caught them.
All metro stations have elevators and escalators--they are often out of service, but the web site is pretty good about detailing which ones are broken.
Not are whether walking long distances is an issue for you, but I would think uber or a bus would be a better option than driving into DC. You won't be able to legally park on the street for more than 2 hours in one spot and garages will easily run you $20 for a few hours.
If you haven't been the Philips Collection I recommend it. It's a beautiful building and has a lot of amazing art.
I went to the Philips Collection in 2012 when they had a Degas exhibit. It was stunning. Lol we ended up there by accident. Impressionist art is my favorite, and the national gallery's impressionist exhibit was closed.
Walking long distances can be an issue. I can walk about three blocks at a time before I need to sit down. I can't stand still for more than five minutes at a time, though.

The Metro has escalators and elevators but sometimeswhen you are in a hurry and late for work they are not working. They do announce and will transport you from one station to another if you need it. The buses also accommodate wheelchairs.
