Why don't you sacrifice the $150 you budget for entertainment each month on renting a car so that you can find someplace to live? I'm sure it wouldn't even cost the entire amount, but I think your idea of "doing everything that I can" is far different than the reality of doing EVERYTHING that you can.
You CAN do other things. You don't want to. That's fine, it's your life. I'm just pointing out that people tend to roll their eyes at you and not want to give further advice when you kick and scream like someone much younger than your age about how much things suck and there's nothing you can dooo. Yeah, it's a sucky situation. With a pretty easy solution.
It's amazing to me that Bliss has the answers for everything...except for her original problem. I also find it weird that other car-less people who work 9-5 are still able to find a place to live.
Thank you for the laughs Bliss, it provides me such entertainment especially for a Monday.
I love that my usage of certain words always starts something. Remember "lovah"?
So what do you call pregaming? Is there a more "adult" term for this?
I am 33 and still use the term pregaming frequently. I know no other term to use and am shocked and sad that there is someone who hasn't heard it used in this sense. I don't even know that I can think of another sense.
But lovah is godawful and should never be used. Ever
Ya, I don't understand the hate. I'm still going to continue to use it.
I've stopped using lovah. I outgrew that one. LOL.
I think people skirt the religious issue by sticking "Standards" in there...If they posted "LDS Only" that would be discrimination, but since they are only asking for specific standards, they are ok. It's like saying no smoking...right? At least, that is what I always figured.

That's what I'm thinking too. The wording is what makes it non-discriminating.

I'm not saying that I can't find a place. I'm saying that there are 2 places that I'd really like to look at for studio apartments, however getting there between 9-5 is difficult. Not impossible, but more work than I'd like to put forth at this time.
Remember, I have 11 days to find a place and move. So that gives me 2 weekends that I have to make arrangements with friends to move. It's just a hassle that I wasn't planning on dealing with and wish I had more time to make better arrangements.
My original problem is that school started today and places are quickly filling up because students aren't working FT. They are able to stop by ASAP whereas I have to wait until after 5 PM. And chances are the places could already be filled. That's beyond my control. That's what's frustrating and what I'm complaining about.
If I heard even a week prior I wouldn't be complaining so much.

Wait, what? Rent a car monthly? Or fork over $100+ for renting a car for 2 days when I can easily walk? It's just an expense that I don't think is necessary. If I needed a car to move than I'd consider renting one but for this instance it's just not worth it. I can easily walk to all the places I'm viewing.
And yes, I am doing those things. I've sent over 100 text messages today trying to figure this out. So yes, I'm doing everything I can. I'm sorry if you can't see that through a message board.
I have friends that still pregame, and call it that. They are in their 30s and 40s. They are mostly single and go out drinking to get wasted. (Not saying you necessarily do that Bliss- just want to show that people still use that word when they get older)
Good luck, Bliss. I hope you get things figured out quickly and painlessly.

Thanks!! I'm praying that I'll either get news about the bungalow or one of these places tonight will work out.
I wasn't starting anything. I was saying that I hear the term used around people my brother's age. I don't call it anything because I am not a big drinker. If I want to, I would call it getting drinks.

But pregaming is for the more casual drinks before the main event drinks! And it frequently happens at homes, and I wouldn't use "getting drinks" when I was going to be drinking at someone's home -- to me "getting drinks" implies that we're going to a bar/lounge/club.
Exactly. I'm glad you understand V.
It seems silly to say "V, we're getting drinks at my house and then getting drinks at Bar X."
It makes more sense to say "V, we're pregaming at my house before we hit up Bar X." Pregaming is also used to wait for others getting off work, commuting over, or killing time so you don't arrive too early.

I am LOLing that people are getting bent out of shape over "pregame". I could be totally wrong, but isn't Bliss in her early-mid 20's? Pre-game, pre-drink, pre-funk were all terms that were thrown around when I was that age.
If you really want to move and getting away from your room mate is your #1 priority, even if it takes 2 hours to get downtown and only be able to look at 1 place, I'd do it.
So push back against your LL's likely illegal request, or follow any of the other pieces of advice you were given to buy yourself more time.
I mean, GEEZ.
I'm planning on pushing back. I just haven't decided how I want to approach it. I really don't want pushing back to turn into a bigger clusterfuck than looking for a place.
I'm debating on either sending an email with my formal written notice. Or giving him a call. On the other hand, I don't want to deal with it. But I know that I need more than 10 days to figure out my living situation.
I mean, GEEZ, it hasn't even been 24 hours since I posted that thread last night. Let's not jump to conclusions that I haven't taken the pieces of advice I received in that thread.
I love that my usage of certain words always starts something. Remember "lovah"?
So what do you call pregaming? Is there a more "adult" term for this?
I have always heard is as prefuncing (pre-function) but again, tends to be a college phrase.
We just say "grab drinks."
We used the term "pregame" in college - we'd drink while we were getting ready so we wouldn't have to buy many drinks out (because, you know, $2 drink specials would add up in college....my budget for the night would often be $5-10 and I'd still have 3-4 drinks out...)
I have not used that term since then and I don't know many adults who do.
It seems silly to say "V, we're getting drinks at my house and then getting drinks at Bar X."

ETA - I also used this term in high school.
How early are you drinking, or do you have workaholic friends who work until 7 or 8pm?

Depends on the event. Usually between 6-8 PM. Not all my friends work 9-5, some work 12-8, others 1-9, just depends on their industry/career level, etc.
I may have missed this, but is there anywhere to live close to your work? That would solve your carpool problem.
The area I work isn't really transportation friendly. It's also more expensive out here, the burbs I guess would be the technical term.
I've looked in the area and it's just more expensive and would still be an hour commute. Which is just silly but again public transit in this area isn't very good. It's off a major freeway and in an industrial area.
Carpooling won't be an issue if I stay in the same area. Which is the plan.
LOL at the pregame discussion. I see nothing wrong with the term, but I'd call it "having drinks at my house before going out".
Good luck Bliss, I'm sure you'll find something. It seems your problems always work themselves out so try not to worry too much and just do what you can.
Do you think you could take a day off work and apartment hunt, if the places tonight don't work? Then maybe you can enlist a friend for help. Also a 1 day car rental shouldn't be anywhere near $100, maybe more like $50 and might be worth it if you really can't find other options. Hopefully you won't need to do that, though.

Thanks. Yes, everything always works out. I'm very lucky that way.
I might see if I can take a day this week, but I really doubt it. It's not like an "emergency" or anything.
As for the car rental, I'm guessing high because of gas prices and what vehicles are available. I could get stuck with a giant SUV for a day and that's pricey. I don't think I'll need a vehicle though. I can walk 5+ blocks just fine. There's not many actual complexes in the area anyway; it's 2 places. Not that important in the grand scheme of things.
I know your post isn't really about this but you can rent a cargo van for moving for pretty cheap. We actually moved my H into his apartment with a cargo van when we were relocating and fit almost everything he needed in there- bed, night stand, dresser, couch, etc. It was <$100. So don't let that stress you out.

I would love to understand how your brain works. I'd say not living on the streets 12 days from now qualifies as an emergency. Also, why did you spend the first part of this post complaining about how you had no idea how you were going to get to any of these apts to view them, and shot down EVERY single person's suggestion, only to turn around and say you're not at ALL worried how you'll see the places because it's not even a big deal anyways. Say what now?
You actually make me feel like I'm stupid because I try to make sense of what you're saying, but I CAN'T lol.

Oh I've got the moving part cowered. Just confirmed that through texts and FB a little bit ago.
I don't really have furniture, other than a bed so I'm able to bribe 2 friends (one with a truck) with a bottle of booze.
Thanks. Yes, everything always works out. I'm very lucky that way.

It's 10 days to be exact. And like I mentioned to another poster, I'm pushing back on my landlord and requesting the full 30 days to evacuate.
I'm not sure my boss will consider it an emergency. At least one that requires a full day off.
I was complaining during the first part of this post about 2 specific places that offer studios that are open 9-5.
I'm not complaining about visiting the other places. The other places I've scheduled to view are within walking distance of my current place. Because again, I'm looking in my current area.
I'm complaining but I'm not worried. I don't care if it doesn't make sense to you. I'm annoyed that my landlord changed things, I'm annoyed I have to *fight* to get my full 30 days notice, I'm annoyed that the 2 studios I like are only open 9-5, I'm annoyed by "LDS standards", I'm annoyed that my car purchase is going to be delayed a month, I'm annoyed that places posted today and this weekend are already filled. This is what I'm complaining about.
That's what I think also. But a majority of the postings around here say "LDS standards apply." I think because it's so "common" that no one questions it.
I mean, I know that units can forbid pets, and I know places that are no-smoking, but I thought religion was one of those things that you couldn't specifically screen by
I think they get around it being illegal because it's standards, not must be of the religion. So everyone knows that means "no drinking, no overnight guests in your room, no whatever else LDS does not do", just like non smoking. You can be an athesist, as long as you're sober.
I wouldn't like it either. Some days you just want to sit on your couch and have a glass of wine.
could you take off of work one day during the week and make up the work on a Saturday if you could borrow someone's car?
Possibly. But I'd have to figure out how I'm getting from work back downtown. Coordinating borrowing a car is just a bigger hassle than I want to deal with.
There's other studio/1 beds available that I could see that will fit my schedule after 5 PM.
It's just not necessary to coordinate borrowing a vehicle for this. The moving portion yes.
We called it pre-drinks in college. It's sad how long I had to think about that to remember it. It's been too long since I drank a homemade concoction made by a roommate while curling my hair to go out.
