I am looking for some additional storage for my craft space since I am picking up my grandmother's desk this weekend and wanted to flank it with 2 - 8 (or 6) cube storage units.
I love the look of cube storage and that the bins and boxes fit neatly inside and everything lines up and you can use the sides of the cubes to contain a particular group of stuff. Very helpful in my craft space but I don't like that you can't fit a standard 3 ring binder in any of them since the cubes are less than 11.7ish inches tall you need to fit the binders.
I don't live near an IKEA so that is out. I found one that would work and coordinates with the blonde wood of the desk for approximately $70 but it is at Walmart. This is the part where I need your help to find other suggestions since I loath shopping at Walmart. I found the same ones on Amazon for twice as much so that is a no go since I need two.
This is what I am looking at. The birch/blond wood would be my first choice but white would work too (nothing dark since my craft room is in the basement). The cubes on this one are about 13x13 which is the biggest cube I have come across. I would love to spend less than $100 each.
If I have to suck it up and shop at Walmart I will but it isn't my first choice. Plus the one in my area is so damn depressing and messy.

What about Target? Home Depot? Lowes? They all usually carry these. But I think the squares may be smaller. I have 5 of the 9 cube ones holding all my craft stuff and they're all from Home Depot.

They are all too small to hold binders straight up and down. The height on most cubes is only 11.5" or 11.25" and 3 ring binders are 11.625" tall.
This is the only one I found other that the IKEA Kallax series. And the closest IKEA is 3 hours away so that is a no go.
Can you just do a regular bookshelf? We have a couple regular bookshelves in our playroom and they have bins on them. So, things still look neat and are functional, but you can adjust the shelf height. Obviously not the same look, but still nice.
I didn't really want to go the book case route (I need the cubes to keep things lined up and contained) . And since finding birch bookcases (that aren't from IKEA) may put me back at Walmart, I may as well go with the cubes. Especially since now that I know that birch ones are out there and they go with the desk, I am having trouble going back to the idea of white bookcases as an alternative.
I've looked at the BHG cubes, and they're almost an exact match to the Ikea Kallax; so, I'd just stick with Walmart. Plus, they offer free shipping, which means you can avoid the store.
The only other option I can think of is the Stackube at Menards.

Sigh.
Bummer. And you can't find another reason to go to ikea? I was 8 hours from one and now I am only an hour away, but 3 is kind of far.
These are 13.5". You could probably find a bin at least at target to check the height. I used to get the itso bins from there for my expedit and they fit perfectly.
emoflamingo Yeah, a 6 hour round trip isn't that appealing, especially since they might not be in stock when we get there. I miss living 30 minutes from IKEA.
I will likely just go with the Walmart ones, especially since munkii said that they were basically the same as the Kallax.

I have this from Amazon via Brookstone. It did arrive with one of the molding pieces broken, but they shipped a replacement, and it was pretty easy to assemble and looks great and solid. The cubes are big -- 14.5" wide, 13" tall, and 14" deep (or at least that's how big the top left one was that I just measured, and I'd assume they are pretty much all the same. It's pricier than you wanted, but with how deep it is and that you could put binders in so the spines show, it would probably hold 10x as much. Don't worry about the negative reviews, they seem mostly applicable to the dressers by the same maker.
ETA: We also have Kallax storage in that room (the turquoise 4x4 one) -- if you want I can take one of the Kallax bins out and put it in the other cube for a picture so you can compare cube size.
I will say that the Kallax drawers are pretty awesome...if scrapbook paper will fit in those they may be worth the trip. You could also put an alert on Craigslist for Kallax / Expedit stuff, in case someone else in your area made the trip and is getting rid of stuff!
