My niece is getting confirmed and she's asked me to be her confirmation sponsor. Neither one of us is religious. I never go to church and she goes sometimes with her parents (holidays and stuff). My mother is pressuring me to get her something religious as a gift but I don't want to spend all this money on something that she doesn't want.
I was thinking of getting her a small religious token and then something else. But what? We both love horses and riding (which is why I think she asked me). I was thinking of maybe a horseshoe necklace...but I don't know. Any ideas?
This is interesting. I'm not sure what denomination she is, but as a Lutheran we had a lot of classes leading up to our confirmation. I wonder if she did any of that.
If they're looking for her to get something more religious, maybe something in the middle, like a meditation book, positive thoughts and sayings? And then get her something horse-related and awesome, too.

Roman Catholic. She was banished to Catholic school last year, after her grades started slipping in public school. Not sure if this has anything to do with it?
This seems like the perfect place to share my non-confirmation story.
I am catholic. We had CCD classes up thru 11th grade and then got confirmed. At the start of my last year of classes, I got my driver's license. My mom THOUGHT I was going to my weekly classes but instead I would go to the mall and then come home at the right time so it appeared I was going to my confirmation classes.
I finally had to fess up when my mom started planning a party for my confirmation. She was not pleased to learn of my sneaky ways.

Do you know which Saint she chose? When I was confirmed, my favorite gift was a prayer card with an illustration of Saint Michael (the Saint I chose). Although I am not a practicing Catholic anymore, I love that prayer card. I look at it every day.
My poor mom wanted one of her kids to get confirmed...but we all let her down! When I got into middle school I started questioning everything and demanding to know how I could possibly be involved in a church that didn't even acknowledge I existed, since my parents got their marriage annulled. I was a charming young lady, I tell you

Uhhhh....did I mention that I NEVER go to church, lol? I forgot you even had to pick a saint. I'll see if my brother knows anything.

Ha! I had all that stuff done and I NEVER go to church. You didn't get confirmed and you now go to church. I'm pretty sure I'm a huge disappointment to my mother, in that regard.

lol...I'm not sure it's a big victory for my mom! She calls our church "fun church" and if she goes with us, she still has to go to "real church" immediately after!

Haha! I still remember the first time I went to XBF's church. I was like "whaaaaat? There's no communion and Our Father?"
ETA: I did go to one church with him that even I couldn't stand. It had a laser light show incorporated. Lol

I felt the same way, when we first start going. "I don't have to sit down, stand up, kneel, lather, rinse, repeat??"

Oh man, BFF's wedding was at a SUPER old-school Catholic church, and as the MOH, I had to be up on the altar at a kneeler. There was no chair to sit down on. It was stand up or kneel.
I think I also surprised the priest. I wasn't thinking and wore a very low-cut, relatively short dress to the rehearsal (I had dressed for the rehearsal dinner, not the rehearsal!), and he was giving me disapproving looks. He looked pretty shocked at the ceremony when I knew all the responses (including the updated versions), songs, when to stand/kneel, etc.! I only go to church a few times a year, but after years and years and years of going every Sunday, it's pretty well ingrained.

Confirmation was not really optional for me. My choices were be confirmed, or move out. I knew long before confirmation that the Catholic faith was not for me, but I did it anyway to appease my mother.

Oh, me too. My parents would only pay for my wedding if it was in a church. I was banished to Catholic school my entire life and had to go to church EVERY week. Probably why I'm the anti-thesis of organized religion now.
My Dad is pretty religious. My brother, mother and I are not. We had a revolt in our house and we said we are no longer going to mass. I haven't been in years. I go to church when I travel but it's to appreciate the architecture.
What about a charm bracelet? You could add a religious charm for the confirmation and an additional horse themed charm.
Then you can continuously add charms for other special occasions in her life.
I thought about this but she is more of a tomboy/punk girl. I don't know if a charm bracelet would be too girly girl for her.
I have a charm bracelet and I'm wasn't a girly girl (in my day, it was grunge lol). My mom was smart enough to give me dragon and music charms. I wore it ironically until I was old enough to admit I loved it for what it was.
