What grade is your child in and how large is their class? Is there an assistant? I guess I was shocked at how big her class is.. but maybe I'm just naive. We are talking about NC schools though so idk why I am surprised.
My daughter is just starting K so I can't speak to that but when I taught K I had 25 kids in my class and a PT assistant that I shared with the other K class. I taught in a charter school so we were able to cap our class sizes.
For DD1, there were three K classes of 18 each - this will be the same for her this year as she heads into 2nd Grade. Last year, there were 2 K classes of about 20 each, and they added an assistant to each classroom to help. For DD2 this year, there are 2 classes of 19 each, and there will also be an assistant in each class I believe.
ETA: We live in NJ, and this is a public school (one of 17 elementary schools in our district)
In our district they have to be 30 or under. Most are hovering in the upper 20s. An aide is really dependent upon how many students have IEPs. When I was student teaching 4th my class was 26 and had 6 kids with IEPs. We had an aide but not every teacher did.
DD1 is in 2nd grade. Idk how many are in her class this year but she had had 22 in both of the last two years. I think state law is 30. We are no where near that in our district.
last year, DS1 had 28 kids in his kindergarten class. They had a teacher and a RECE, both full time. There were 7 kindergarten classes last year. Almost 300 4-5 year olds. It was crazy. They redrew the boundary lines so there should only be 4 kindergarten classes this upcoming year. He doesn't go back for 2 more weeks, but I imagine his class will be a similar size this year.
Okay, I am definitely just living under a rock. She has 21 kids in her K classroom with a full time aid. It just seems like so many when sometimes I can't even control 2! The local charters school has only 14 kids in their K classes. A mom was kind of rubbing it in and making me feel bad about that.
In K, there were 3 classes of about 22 or 23 kids each. He's in first now and I honestly have no idea how many per class. But as it's still 3 classes, I'm assuming the class size is about the same.
They try to keep the classes around 20 give or take one or two. In kindergarten, they had a teacher, an aide, and a daily parent volunteer. In first and second grade, there is just the one teacher.

I'm sure it'll be ok. My son's kindergarten class had about the same amount. They did a lot of stations rotations for the academic portion of the day. They usually had four groups, with a teacher working with one, the aide working with another, a parent volunteer overseeing the third, and the fourth were eating snack or engaging in free play. It was amazing to me how much work they were able to get through this way. They (the teacher and the aide) really knew what they were doing.
Enrollment is off the charts this year. All of the local schools are full. I think the kid's school is 200 over max. The classes are large but the teachers seems to be handling it. K, 2nd and 3rd are 26-30 kids. They don't have room to add anymore classes. There are shared aides and a ton of parent volunteers.

So how big is her class?
I think our average for her school is 25 with an assistant.
Our hasn't started yet, but it sounds like it's going to be high 20s (and no full time aid, maybe some part time help or parent volunteers). 21 with full time aid sounds great to me!
K tops out at 27. There is an aide in the classroom as well as parent volunteers every day. The older grades top out at 30. I'm not sure about an aide but there is usually a parent volunteer in the classroom every day.
Our school is a charter so class size is tightly controlled because they can turn away families above a certain number.
In K home rooms had 23 kids with a full time para.
In 1/2 home rooms have 24 kids.
In 3/4 home rooms have 24 kids... Or maybe it increases to 25 that year. Can't remember.
They switch for math and literacy so those classes have more or less kids depending in the ability level. Like the non readers in K have a much smaller class, while the kids that are already reading well have a slightly larger class.
DD's class size is capped at 28. There was an assistant teacher for K and 1st. This is her first year with only 1 classroom teacher, so I guess her class size has effectively doubled? We'll see how that goes...
DH teaches high school; his class sizes can be up to 30-35 kids. It's really too many. Sometimes they try to give him more students than he has computers (he teaches comp sci and photography).
So far, 17-20 with one teacher. This year started weird. DS is in 3rd grade and there are 14 children but that is because they had so many new children, they had to add 3rd grade classes......and they are in portables. Ugh This area is growing a lot and a relief school that opened in 2012 is not enough.

18 in first grade.
In Florida primary grades (Kindergarten through... maybe 3rd or 4th) are limited to 18 kids per class. They can go over that only if they add a second teacher (not an aide, a licensed teacher).
DD1's school in particular the largest they will let a class get is 32. At 33 kids they split it into two separate classes in two separate classrooms.
DH was upset about the class sizes being so big because when DD1 was in K at the same school there were only 15 kids in her class. The school advertises as having small classes and that was one of the reasons we chose that school. He is not happy about paying $$$ for classes that relatively big. There is only one K classroom and two classrooms were they combine 1st and 2nd.

We're also in NC and DS is in K. The class has 19 kids and an aide. Yesterday was the first day, so I'm not sure if the aide is part or full time.
