For a just over 1 year old on a flight across the country for the holidays (so, doing so is around an extra $1000 at this point) He's a BIG boy (already 22 lbs at 9 months) although generally fairly calm and happy to be held/worn... but not sure if that will be the case as he will most likely get much more mobile in the months up to this trip...

No. I don't buy seats for my kids until I have to because our travel budget is already very tight and it is necessary for us to fly to see family.
We didn't fly across the country, but we just did 2 hours with DD and ended up with a seat on the way back. She wouldn't sit in it. She just wanted to be held the whole time. For $1000 I would just hold him the whole time.
For $1000, I probably wouldn't. What is the arrangement of seats on the plane? Can you do two seats together without a third/stranger next to you? That would seal the deal for me.
no, I don't pay until they turn 2 and I'm forced to.
I flew alone with them both transatlantic last month (~6 hours per flight), 3 year old in her seat and 15 month old on my lap. It wasn't easy but it was worth the $900 I saved by not buying him a seat!

Heck no.
I did not buy seats for my kids until we had to. In fact, DD2 turned 2 while we were on vacation. She flew in my lap on the way there and in her own seat on the way home.
This is kid specific. At that age I would've bought a seat because she was just learning to walk and still squirmy. She hated sitting on laps and would last about 30 seconds.
Now she still isn't the biggest fan of sitting on laps but is happy to be distracted by the iPad. At that age she was not amused by it.
You mean the "IT'S NOT WORTH THE RISK!!!!" backlash that often comes up?
Just every time someone asks if they should buy a seat.
I wonder if it's the price tag? I mean, I'm always in the "risk taker" camp, but I'm usually a lonely minority of people that post.
I think it was the price. For me, it also sounded like the situation wasn't that awful, in terms of holding a kid. Cross country flights are long, but not *that* long and there will be two adults to one child.

The price is crazy! Ugh. Holiday travel is no joke. We aren't going to get a seat.. But we did get a bulkhead row
I just recently bought DD a seat for our international flight last June and again for this winter, she is still under 2. For 1000$ though, it would have to be more than an 8 hour flight for me to pay that. DD is a nightmare on the plane though and screams and flails about....I couldn't share a single chair with her without getting a busted lip or something.
