DH and I are rethinking our addition and just contemplating a reno...it would involve the kitchen and I am wondering if I want to do butcher block instead of a stone.
I had them in our last house and was really happy with them. You do have to be a bit careful-I did discolor them once by putting a hot pot (just off the stove) directly on the counter-but that was just dumb of me anyway. We lived in our house for 3 years and oiled them twice, I think, and they were in really good shape. I'd get them again in a heartbeat!
I have butcher block on top of my pantry cupboard/free standing island.
I honestly don't think I'd want a whole kitchen of it. It seems to need a lot of love. If anything sits on it stains, even oiled. It's sticky if not wiped constantly (which in a kitchen isn't a big deal because everything gets wiped all the time, but it maybe to you). Mine is starting to look a little beat up even with oil and love. Some people love that, I think it just looks grungy.
It's definitely pretty and I overall love the look but for my day to day life, I much prefer my Wilsonart over the butcher block.
We have them on the island in our kitchen. I love them! We oil them probably 4 times/ year. I love being able to chop veggies, roll cookies, etc on them.

We had them in our last house and I loved them. I used mineral oil every couple of months and they looked great! I was super paranoid about cleaning up spills and water right away though.
My dad has had them for 40 years in his house. I don't think they have been oiled in a looong time. They still look ok, beat up but it just adds character
Alright I'll dissent and say hate. We have it on the island and have mold spots everywhere even though we've been careful and sanded/oiled. Same thing happened to my friend (her whole kitchen).

The idea of this is very interesting to me. Similar to the built-in butcher block cutting boards. I'm sorry if this is a really stupid question but how can you just cut veggies on them? Do you just wipe when done? And that keeps it clean/sanitary? I would love a huge butcher block cutting board. I love the look, but the idea of washing it daily isn't appealing. Is there something about it where that is unnecessary?

I wipe it down with hot soapy water before I chop veggies or something. We never cut meat on it. The mineral oil every quarter helps too. I really just think of it as one giant cutting board.
