There is a tailor near me who I've never used before. They get good reviews on Yelp and such. Of course, I have a pile of stuff that needs tailoring that's a mile high. I'd like to bring over one or two things just to test them out first.
I have things like pants that need hemming, a blouse that needs to be altered, a shift dress that needs to be taken in at the top, and a dress that needs hemming (and maybe some other alterations).
WDYT I should have tailored that would be a good test of their skills?

I'd go with the hemming and if that works out go for something that needs minor alterations next. You can figure out a lot by price and quality of a hem. I took more major stuff to try someone new. Her prices were high. She made me prepay for everything and she had several fashion design students doing the bulk of her work. She gets rave reviews, but I really didn't like her attitude and level of professionalism. She was smoking on her steps, talking on her cell, and the only person there when I picked up. She made me wait inside for 10 minutes while she finished smoking and talking. I wish I had given her something smaller since I prepaid her $70 for the alterations that took close to a month and crappy service.

Good point. I guess I'll work my way up the ladder from easy to complicated.
