While I think of myself as an independent, I do vote republican frequently. I did not vote for this idiot though in our primary. Rumor has it that a lot of McCaskill supporters voted republican in the primary and elected him because they knew she could beat him. Clearly they were right.

That's the deadline given to him by election laws in the state of Missouri. (The 11th Tuesday before the election.) Then the state GOP would decide who to put on the ballot.
He could also obtain a court order to have his name taken off the ballot by September 25 (the 6th Tuesday before the election).
