I'm back to school, so the job hunt is done for this year. I did get a new seat by the window, though. That's nice to have. I've also been asked to be the tech specialist for our team. No pay increase, but a good resume-builder. I'm really going to give my all to this job this year in hopes of finally landing a FT teaching position next year.
I launch a live streaming series this Friday. Beginning the promotion for passive income.
I've started brainstorming content for a 170 page book. Looking to self publish by spring. Will use NaNoWriMo to get everything written at least. 170 pages isn't that much.
I'm learning to say no to projects that don't immediately excite me.
Can I do one almost 3 years after the fact? At my previous employer and in the position I was at when I left, I knew I was running out of work to do; I could barely fill my 40 hour workweeks. I met with my manager a few times and while he was salaried and putting in a lot hours, he never delegated. I tried for promotions, but the internal politics of that place were unbelievable. They put me through leadership training and in there they made a comment that while not all of us were supervisors or managers, they recognized us as future leaders and to try applying for these positions in the future even if we didn't necessarily have all of the experience. I was then told after applying for one position that I couldn't get a supervisory position without supervisory experience and they weren't sure where I was going to get it.
I started job hunting and wound up finding my current position at a 30% pay raise and a better work environment. I kept getting told by former coworkers at former employer how great it was, etc. FF to this last weekend. I ran into a former coworker who is VERY loyal to that company. He is livid. They are splitting up the centralized departments into 2 different locations - they new location is a 1/2 hour drive away. In his department, he and 3 other coworkers from that department being forced to move; they are the only 4 who want to stay; 3 of them have young families. The executives & HR said it can't be about where you live, but another department has only 1 employee moving to said new location b/c it's closer to where she lives. I then talked to someone else who said a long time employee just left for a smaller competitor and said he won't be the last.
mrsfarmer - your previous sounds exactly like my current. All sorts of leadership training. And then they refuse to promote anyone to supervisor. They are only putting in supervisors that have previous supervisory experience.
My interview today is for a baby supervisor position. But in a group I don't want to work for and a commute I don't want. Plus, I found out after applying that I'm up against someone that I can't compete with and I think she deserves it (I didn't expect her to apply bc it's lateral in grade for her). So, I'm just calling it interview experience lol
rubytue - that's the thing, they did promote others without supervisory experience, but others they wouldn't. There was a very clear line of favoritism among the head of HR and upper management. Do you want to know an unpopular thing to do? Call HR and question it!
I should clarify, it's not so much a group I don't want to work for, but a group I always said I could never work in. So it would be completely different and quite a challenge to switch to this group. But I also want a challenge. I'm bored to tears with what I do. Today was literally an argument over whether there was a technical rationale for an outline vs filled in triangle. I just can't anymore.
But the commute is far worse. 15-20 mins longer, on top of the hour I do now.
I finally have something to report! I've been trying unsuccessfully to find a better part time job, so I've started applying for full time.
I just got a call from a recruiter for one of the jobs! I'm so excited. I'm a little worried about the increase in hours, but the position itself sounds really exciting and a great fit.
I've sent countless resumes off into nothingness over the past 5 months. I'm just happy to have gotten a call, and hope that it's a sign that some of these jobs were moving slowly because it was summer. This one I applied to in June.
Remember how I was on the fence about applying for a job in a neighboring county because I wasn't willing to travel countywide (up to 3 hours away in one possible case)?
Well I applied anyway and was upfront about where I'd be willing to be assigned. Related to my earlier post that went poof, it's actually this county that started making inquiries about me. And yesterday they called my references!
Aaaand just heard back again from the recruiter. She was able to reach her client on vacation and got the go ahead to schedule an interview! Scheduled for Tuesday!
I have 6 days to buy a suit and update my portfolio.
Interview is over. I think I did pretty good. Not great, but didn't bomb it. Didn't really prep and it probably showed, especially since they asked "how did you prepare for the interview?"
I answered. She came back with "you didn't (insert really good idea)?" Me: "That would have been a really good idea!" And laughed. Bc that's all I could do. But otherwise, I think I did ok.
