The Magic Treehouse, Ralph the Mouse, Nate the Great, Henry and Mudge, the Fudge series, Captain Underpants are all hits in this house. Our son just started 2nd grade too.
I'd also recommend The Hardy Boys and The Boxcar Children. Jackson hasn't read those yet, but they are on my list when I go to the library to get him books (I have a list of things he wants to read during the year so if I go to the library when he's not with me, I can get some things for him). Oh and if he's into Minecraft at all, I think there are some Minecraft books. I've seen them at Target and Costco - they aren't the guides, they are chapter books. No idea if they are good or not.
The Fudge series (Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing, Superfudge, etc.), Wayside School series.
Word of warning - I think Superfudge outs Santa as not real if you aren't there yet. We aren't... and I think that's the right book that I was warned about.
I second the Wrinkle in time series and add anything by Daniel Pinkwater, whose works I think we started in 3rd grade. The Pinkwater stuff can be a little hard to find. I was also eating up Nancy Drew books at that age.

Huh. M read it, but didn't mention this.
I could be misremembering which book it is, but I thought it was that one. Jackson hasn't read it yet, and we don't have it at the house.
I googled and I guess chapter 10 is Santa Who... it's been forever since I've read this book.

That's the right one. My nephew was assigned the book in fourth, the teacher honestly forgot about that part. Huge uproar by the parents.

I can't imagine Lucy sitting down to read a book. She knows how to read, and does incidental reading all the time and surprises me with the words that she can figure out. But she just won't sit still long enough! Now I'm nervous for second grade :/

I actually think part of the reason he is so into it is his adhd. Reading allows him to focus and shut his brain off. So it is because he is super smart. It is just a way to relax his poor head.
We are into Amelia Bedelia now. We started the series last year and are going to try to finish before Christmas. I think Santa may bring the Ramona books.
Hatchet might be too advanced for him, but think about Gary Paulsen's books as he gets older, especially if he loves the outdoors. Madeline L'Engle Boxcar Children BSC Goosebumps SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK (okay maybe not) Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys Beverly Cleary anything
Probably better for a girl, but DD loved the Ramona series this summer. We're going to try the Judy Blume "Fudge" books, which are probably more boy centric.
Don't read Superfudge unless you want your kids to know there is no Santa (or if he already knows). That is how my ds found out. But ds did LOVE those books.
Back to the original questions:
- Dan Gutman's Baseball Card series (Jackie and Me, Honus and Me, etc.)
- The World According to Humphrey (and the rest of the series)
- 39 Clues (if he is a strong reader; some liked it in 2nd and some thought it was too hard)
ETA: Sorry, saw the Superfudge v. Santa thing was addresses already. I just remember reading that page with ds and I started crying because I knew he just figured it out. He thought it was hilarious that I was Santa (and the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy) ... thank goodness!
Oh and dont be nervous. Chapter books are not expected in 2 nd grade. His teacher wont even let him check them out at the library.
This depends on the school. DS was expected to read chapter books in 2nd grade and do guided book reports (forms to fill out about the book to "guide" them through the process of a book report) on them.
The "I Survived..." series (Lauren Tarshis) is a huge hit with my son, starting in grade 2 and now entering grade 3. The topics are heavy (9/11, Katrina, the Nazi invasion, Titanic, Gettysburg, etc) but written to that age level. The series has really engaged him and also gotten him interested in history.
My son (just started second grade) LOVES these books. He started with them in first grade. The first time he brought one home I was all WTF, but I agree they are written in a way that didn't scare him or anything.

Yes but remember we are just starting school. I anticipate it will be part of the curriculum as the year goes on.

Something for you to look forward to! LOL!
I just thought of two more series:
- Who was ... (Abe Lincoln, Steve Jobs, etc)
- Who Would Win? (wasp v. hornet, lobster v. crab, etc.)
