The Bad Kitty chapter books are hilarious, and they actually do a really great job of addressing some topics like election laws/processes (Bad Kitty for President).
Captain Underpants.
Magic Treehouse.
The 'ology books. Dragonology, Oceanology, etc. My kids LOVE those.
What about the A Wrinkle In Time series? I was partial to the Babysitters Club myself, but probably not something he'd enjoy
You never know! H totally loved babysitter club series. At one point he owned them all. I'm hoping his mom saved them. She saved every other thing from his childhood, so fingers crossed!
Probably better for a girl, but DD loved the Ramona series this summer. We're going to try the Judy Blume "Fudge" books, which are probably more boy centric.
My second grade son started the Junie B Jones series last year. They had a class trip to see the play at a local college (my alma mater!) and all the kids loved it. It's cute.
We teach series book clubs in second grade, it's one of my favorite units!
Here are some series books that I have used during that unit:
Mr. Putter and Tabby Iris and Walter Bad Kitty Dragon Slayers Academy Mercy Watson Houndsley and Catina Poppleton The Littles The Ramona series Franny K. Stein My Weirder School Bailey School kids Ivy and Bean Stink Judy Moody
When I was in the classroom, my third graders (and me!) loved The Series of Unfortunate Events. I have all 13 books, lol. My dd1 read them and now my twins are going through them - although they don't have the love that I still do. I told my DS I was going to start reading them outloud to him.

The "I Survived..." series (Lauren Tarshis) is a huge hit with my son, starting in grade 2 and now entering grade 3. The topics are heavy (9/11, Katrina, the Nazi invasion, Titanic, Gettysburg, etc) but written to that age level. The series has really engaged him and also gotten him interested in history.
My Weird School is also one of his favorite series.
E has been on a Nancy Drew kick this summer. She also loves Roald Dahl and Beverly Cleary, or maybe just Ramona. And Baby-Sitters Club since my MIL saved all of SIL's. Her summer reading has been totally nostalgic for me!
I agree this age of reading is so much fun. This age is when reading became such a big deal to me so I am so happy to see he is following in my footsteps.
I am also thrilled to see a lot of the oldies are still popular. Thank you also for the recommendations for some of those new fancy books all the kids like these days.
