DS used a ring potty seat until he turned about 5. Then he decided he was a big boy and didn't need one. And since he doesn't need one, DD won't use it either. She's 3. With DS, we didn't care about public potties, since he stood up. With DD, I held her hands in public restrooms. This was especially good when we when camping and she took 20 minutes to poop. I know they have fold up ring potty seats you could get if you don't want to hold her. We did pull-ups at night only. We skipped pull-ups during the day. She (unlike DS) never peed in the pull-ups at night, so we quickly moved to just underpants.

M refuses to use any type of potty seat, I did buy a ring at Target last year though. I just go with him & help hold him when he sits so he doesn't fall in. We did get step stools for the sinks to make it easier for him.
You could do pull ups now or you could skip them altogether & go straight to underwear. Pull ups are nice because they are easier to pull up/down than diapers but you avoid messy accidents. But some kids treat them like diapers, which doesn't necessarily help.
we use one of those rings. we just bought it at target. we had it hanging up on a hook on the wall when our realtor came through and she said "oh! it looks nautical!" LOL.
once we really started to potty train we didn't use pull ups at all. we still put a regular diaper on during nap and overnight, but just underwear at all other times. DS still hasn't pooped in the potty he just does it in his underwear, every day.

I did not do pull ups until after DS learned. He was naked for a day, then no underwear under shorts.
Once he learned, he did a week in pull ups at daycare. Then he moved to underwear. I was interested in using as few pull ups as possible, since they are expensive.
He still wears a diaper/pull up at nap (although he stays dry), and an overnight diaper. The overnight is usually dry as well.
@little_Moxie & I both used the Oh Crap book with success.

My kid will go between the ring and small potty, no problem. I liked having a small potty in the learning phase. I bought the $4.99 one piece IKEA potties for each car as a backup.
We swapped out all of our toilet seats for the ones posted above. I like it because it doesn't add any extra height to the seat so it's much easier for her to use independently. All of the grandparents have swapped out their toilet seats for those as well.
When we are in public I just hold onto her waist while she goes so she doesn't have to touch anything.

In public, DS stands, so no help there.
I want standing up to happen. DS tried it once on our little potty and the aim left a lot to be desired. Damn foreskin.
Anyway, HOW do you do this in a public toilet? I feel like getting him to stand on it would work better than getting him up high enough. And he isn't particularly short!
@this - check out the Oh Crap book. Read as little as you can get away with, the author is supremely annoying.
Standing started at DC - most of the boys are standing. His daycare BFF has a 5 yo brother, so I think he showed the other kids what his brother does. It's easier at DC, because they are the right height and he can lean forward and use the wall to brace.
I have tried to stand him on it, but he freaked out. I lift him up and kind of brace him against myself, and then do the reach around to help aim. I hate aiming though, and I'm not that good at it. I will say, DS has never pooped in public, although he loves pooping in the potty at home and gets sad if he fails to poop.
We never used anything. DC taught him how to brace himself to poop sitting forward (he sits pretty far back and leans forward, bracing himself on the seat), he learned to pee sitting backward on the toilet and now can stand 75% of the time (some public toilets are still too tall for him).
At home she is fine without anything or sometimes she'll use her Bjorn ones. I love the Bjorn insert. Adjusts to fit any seat and it has a way to hang it.

We have a baby bjorn seat. It's nice if she is going to sit a while, but really it's kind of annoying. I'd probably just help her sit on the toilet herself.
I think pullups are kind of unnecessary, except for maybe nighttime.
