DS's first private school did 2-3 each year. His second private did 3 biggies that required transportation and lots of money- McCarter Theater and Sesame Place, for instance; they also did 3 weekly walking and/or van trips to the library, out for ice cream, the Princeton Museum and for PE at one of the university's gyms.
His public school generally did one big field trip and one or two local trips to a local park for science or into the historic part of town for social studies.

When C was in traditional school they did 2 field trips per year, one in each semester. At their homeschool charter they go on 1-2 field trips per month.
EDIT: big field trips, that is. They did several smaller field trips to the park, library, fire station, etc. in K and 1st grade. Those were all walking field trips (small town)
I teach 6th. We try to do one per quarter. We're in a low-income district; money is an issue. Our students do a walkathon to raise money for their trips; we also have a a local "art bus" that schools can use free of charge to go on certain field trips (museums, plays/musical performances, etc.). 6 seems like a lot before the end of the second quarter!

5-7 per year. Generally the pumpkin patch, a few theater performances, a ballet, the science museum, and a park and/or the zoo. Next year (5th grade) they add on a week at an outdoor/environmental learning center.
We ask teachers to limit it to be a total of about $40-50 a year in order to be respectful to parents with multiple children. In grade 7 and 8 the students usually take a larger trip, which costs a lot more, but not all student have to go.
I think I've received notices for 3 field tripsor my first grader that happened in the first two months of school. I'm sure there will be several more throughout the year. My fourth grader has already been on one field trip and there are plans for a neighbor island trip in February.
K - two. One to the high school for an orchestra performance and one to the little local zoo 1 - his teacher mentioned one to the local caves at open house so I am assuming that's it.
