Trying to see how much time we should allow. My mom wants to make a reservation for a train or something elsewhere. Houston zoo you could spend most of the day just walking to each exhibit.
We have an annual membership, it is amazing! Not huge, but really good.
I would budget at lest half a day. It's on a hill, so we usually go early and walk up to the top (the Australia part, where they have freely wandering wallabies!), then work our way down through the day. Are you taking kids? How old?
Which train is she thinking about? Pikes peak cog railway? We did that once with C and it was miserable. Maybe with older kids and a good kid:adult ratio it would be okay. Just really uncomfortable and no bathroom. And expensive. If you want to go to the top of pikes peak, just drive. It's a lot less expensive and there are places to stop and use the restroom, picnic, etc.
VillainV We will have a 1.5 year old with us. She loved feeding the giraffes at the Houston zoo and I heard Cheyenne has an awesome giraffe exhibit. Though now I'm excited about wallabies!
I think my mom wanted to do PP cog but was also looking at Royal Gorge. We will be white water rafting the Arkansas by the gorge on another day. I've been to Colorado Springs once before and she has been several times. Originally when we planned this vacation I was going to hike PP starting very early, that plan has since been abandoned lol. That was probably why she was wanting the cog, so I could ride back down.
Any food recommendations? I have Edelweiss, Tapateria and something at the Broadmoor on my list.
Yes, you can feed the giraffes from a raised platform (so you're at eye-level with them). C is about the same age, and he likes the giraffes but gets creeped out by their long blue tongues! They also have lots of big cats, elephants, otters, two grizzly bears....we love it. It depends on how good your kiddo is with zoos, but C is usually only good for about 2 or maybe 3 hours if we stop for lunch. If you go early you can see a lot in a short time.
We haven't done Royal Gorge railway, but it's on our list!
For food, we like Salsa Brava for Mexican. The Golden Bee at the Broadmoor is pretty good but a little overpriced. The Broodmoor just opened a new restaurant at Seven Falls which is supposed to be really good, but we haven't been there yet (will probably do a date night when my parents are here in a few weeks and can watch C).

I was just in Colorado Springs a couple weeks ago and ate here. It was good!
Ooh good to hear. The menu looks a little light online so I was hesitant, glad it was good I think we will stick with it.
