Are you flying out of Newark or LGA? Cafeteria is not on the UWS, but is on the west side, down around 17th or 18th (so would make getting to Newark fairly easy, LGA not so much). Their chicken & waffles are AMAZING. they have lovely drinks as well, if you're interested in a boozy breakfast.
Quick snack/pastry also in that area is City Bakery on W. 18th. Have you ever had a pretzel croissant? You won't realize this needed to be invented until you try one. They also have lots of other delicious baked goods and amazing mac & cheese if you decide you want something heartier (plus a full salad bar with other options). Oh, and lovely hot chocolate (plus coffee, of course). If you want to be a good mom and pick up a book or two for your kids, children's bookstore Books of Wonder is on the same street.
On the UWS, there's a Magnolia Bakery outpost on Columbus Avenue in the 60s or so (I forget the exact cross street). There's a Shake Shack on 77th & Columbus, for shakes as a snack, or a burger if you count that as a snack. And another good book store--Book Culture--on Columbus at 81st Street, because what use is a satisfied belly without a satisfied mind?
I'll keep thinking about other breakfast options on the UWS.

::drools:: They are AMAZING.
I have no recs, sorry. I suck at food recs. I make @dontcallmeshirley1 pick all of our meal places.
Also, this is the post where I stand up and say, "see, my long walks and food obsessive-ness make me a mother-farking-awesome person and resource for all, not a burden on humanity" (if confused, see yesterday's confessions thread, in which I am called out for engaging in these activities).
They are a bit higher up but Lenny's Bagels (98th and B'way) is a total hole in the wall but the bagels are excellent. I love a good diner and Manhattan Diner was great (B'way and 94ish) but I have not been there in awhile. For a bakery, Grandaisy Bakery on 72nd and B'way is great.
