I will third the recommendation to watch "Blink". That's the episode I use to introduce new people to the show. Also, the visual effects are pretty bad for season 1, slightly better with Tenant's seasons, and then MUCH better from Smith on. While 10th doctor is my favorite, I do think 11's episodes have some of the best stories/visual effects. Still not sure about 12.
I can understand Doctor Who, there is a lot. But FIREFLY?! You can knock that out in an day. It's amazing. Go watch it now.
I was going to post exactly this! I didn't watch Firefly until a few months ago and then I kicked myself SO DAMN HARD for waiting.
I didn't see it originally until it came out on DVD because I didn't have cable when it first aired. I made my H, then boyfriend, go to the movie with me even though he hadn't seen the show. He went back and knocked the show out the weekend after seeing the movie.
Ok...we just watched the Dalek episode. It was like a cheap, mean R2D2 with new feelings. That moved slower than my 8 year old getting out the door to soccer, yet caught everyone. This is not making me hopeful...
Oh yes, the threatening salt and pepper shakers who couldn't navigate stairs originally. I laugh at some of these alien villains too because I never watched as a kid. I don't find them or the cyber men all that intimidating. But they come up with other baddies that are actually (at least somewhat) intimidating.
Promise me that you'll watch up to "Blink". Hands down the best episode in the series imho. If you still think it's all too cheesy, then you have my permission to stop watching.

Yeah I couldn't watch it when it originally came out because we didn't get the channel. Same thing with Dollhouse, which I watched about a year ago. I loved that one too but I know it doesn't have as big of a following.

I went through a Joss Whedon kick on Netflix and watched Dollhouse. I really liked it and much like Firefly I wish there was more. The premise was so interesting.
Doctor Who is the shit, but the first (new) season isn't the best intro to the series. I made my sister start with the second season, and she eventually worked her way around to (and appreciated) the first. Eccleston is wonderful, but he really suffers from the poor effects and somewhat uneven storytelling in the early part of the first season.
A friend picked his favorite episodes and I jumped around with those for awhile before starting the first new season. It's always cheesy but it gets much better.
I always like sharing this. Because I worked really hard to make it. Haha
I would also add that while it is cheesy, certain episodes and themes are so brilliant that they take it way above its own material. Blink has been mentioned, but there is also one called (I think) The Lady In The Fireplace or something. That was brilliant. And there are a number of episodes that really are amazing and leave you thinking, like the best Sci Fi should.
However, there are also a number of episodes where what appears to be a gray plastic poop is the villain. Theres only so much of that I can take lol.

I'm loving this thread so hard right now.
A couple years ago for Halloween I went as (denim jacket) River Song and J went as the Silence. Surprisingly, we were not the nerdiest costumes at the party.
I watched ER before I watched DOctor Who. I had SUCH a hard time getting Alex Kingston to be River over Dr. Corday in my head. In one of the first few episodes she was in, I kept yelling "you're a doctor, FIX IT." Then I realized that she wasn't dr Corday and I got sad all over again.

Dr. Corday is one of the reasons I keep meaning to watch Dr Who!

Blink is one of the few "new" episodes I've seen. At which point I decided I wanted to start at the beginning, the original series. As a kid, I had watched Doctors 4, 5 and 6. I've been working through what Netflix has on DVD--have a couple episodes left of Doctor #2.
Firefly, some of Red Dwarf (still working on collecting those), and Pinky and Brain are the only TV shows I own on DVD. Just buy Firefly, you wont regret it:)
Ugh, I just don't see the appeal. I watched the first few episodes and it just felt like it was trying to hard with the "we're cowboys in space" shtick.
I'm going to be voted off the island now, aren't I?
Eta: even my love of Gina Torres and Alan Tudyk couldn't save the show for me.
