Is anyone a subscriber (past, present, future) to Angie's List? I have never signed up but am considering it. The impression I get is that it is sort of like a Consumer Reports style website but for businesses that provide services. I'd love to hear feedback from anyone who used it or uses it.
I got a subscription via Groupon. It's ok. I'm not convinced it's better than Yelp of NeXT Door for asking for recommendations.. Glad I didn't pay full price for it.
I'd also say that I've never been harassed to leave reviews.
Yes, we use it all the time. They have great listings even for our small town. We've hirer a tree service, exterminator, carpet cleaners, and plumber who specialized in hot water heaters so far. Each of them has been great. DH (who is very picky) says "I haven't found an A-rated person who hasn't met my expectations. It's definitely worth the money."
We have never gotten harassed to leave reviews or anything like that.

Yup this is where I am. I've never been harassed to leave reviews and when I moved to a new city and knew no one I joined up, read reviews and have not been disappointed in anyone I have chosen to do work.
It has been worthwhile, but I only paid like $7 for the year.
They have groupon like deals with some of the businesses and ratings for most others.
Having dealt with it from the business side though, they put companies higher up when they pay Angie's List. So from a consumer standpoint, I carefully go through reviews and purposely don't look at the first 2-3 pages Angie's List gives me in searches.

Interviewed someone for a drywall job, but checked their name against court records and just got out of prison for felony aggravated home repair fraud. I informed AL of this and they wouldn't block him, even after I linked to the court website and informed them he was still on parole. That left a sour taste in my mouth to never use Angie's list.
It used to be good. Now too many contractors pay people to leave glowing reviews. And all the ones with great ratings are too busy to call you back and are 3x a reasonable price if they do.
I've had better luck on Home Advisor lately, and that's free.

Wow! That is seriously disappointing and good to be aware of this "dark side"...yikes. I commend your diligence!
