We need to buy a fridge and stove for our new place. What features do you love/hate in your current appliances? Any tips to make the buying process less painful? Recommendations for places to look? Especially fellow Canucks. Help me be an adult please!
When we bought our appliances last year, I went with a freestanding double oven and love it. The upper oven is smaller than the lower and we use the smaller oven quite a bit.
We got our fridge (the kind with the fridge on top with 2 doors and a freezer drawer at the bottom -- can't remember what the style is called) in stainless, but with a special coating that prevents fingerprints and smears. It was totally worth it.

This is the kitchen right now. The dish washer is staying but they are taking the fridge and stove. I think I need to stick with SS as we aren't replacing the dish washer but I will definitely ask about the coating.

French door fridges FOR LYFE!!! We love our GE one.
We also love our Frigidaire range. It has a good-size bottom drawer for storage. It also has five burners, which makes it easier to slide pots and pans around when we are cooking multiple items (or even single items).

Ohhhh I didn't know this was an option. We will be in the market soon and I'm definitely going to look into this. Thanks!
Frigidaire makes a "smudge free" SS that is pretty easy to keep looking nice. We have a French door model, and really like it. The only downside is that we went for counter-depth, and it just doesn't have a lot of storage space (about 22 cu ft as opposed to 26ish for full-depth). But the counter depth looks SO NICE.
The rest of our appliances are GE Profile (brand new, came in our new build house) and in the 3 months we've lived here, we've had probably 4-5 service calls for replacement t or repair -- all covered by warranty, but sometimes we have waited weeks to over a month for the repair due to back ordered parts (I spent a month in a brand new house with no functioning dishwasher!).
We bought Samsung appliances through Sears and I hate them. We got a French door fridge with pull out freezer on the bottom- it didn't work when it was delivered. It took two weeks to get a replacement. We also got the Samsung flex duo oven which after a year and a half cost us $700 to repair. The Samsung dishwasher that we bought at the same time went up in flames after a month. The customer service thiough Sears was appalling. Looking back, I wish that we bought from a local dealer that sells GE. I don't mid SS, I've found some wipes that work pretty well. eta: the only good thing is that since our fridge is on a slant in a corner we were able to buy an extra deep Samsung fridge to maximize the space.

Don't get a Frigidaire dishwasher. We have been without for 3 months now and neither Frigidaire or the repair company will take responsibility. The repair guy says that Frigidaire ones are crap and recommends whirlpool.

Don't pay the listed price. They will always offer a better price if you ask.
I love our samsung stove but it is nothing too fancy. Has the center griddle pan and burner. I actually sold the professional stove that came with the house to buy it. I needed a stove that was for an occasional cook. The professional was just too hot and I am too unskilled of a cook to use it. I pretty much only make scrambled eggs and the professional had then boiling on summer lol
I have my eye on the 4 door samsung but want the one with the stainless steel interior and need to save up for that.

We have a french door, bottom freezer Samsung fridge with a 4th door that pulls out for drinks/cheeses/meats/etc. We love it. We use the middle pull out drawer so much!

I hate hate hate our white topped, flat top stove. I've never seen anyone else with a white top and I know why. It sucks to keep clean. I spent half an hour last night trying to get the black marks off.

Ditto this. We have a gas stove with 2 ovens. It's great because I can cook 2 things at different temps (great for parties or holidays) and I use the smaller oven 99.9% of the time.
Fridge- we love our French door fridge. I love it so much more than my old side by side. I've heard horrible things about Samsung appliances- major problems with friends who have purchased.

I strongly agree. It's the best thing in my kitchen (a close second is the touch faucet). We have the LG and love it.
We just bought GE Slate. I LOVE them! They're close enough to SS to not be offensive with your dishwasher, but different enough to add some interest. I have 2 little boys & I haven't had to clean fingerprints off of anything other than the handles (which is minimal) since we moved in at the beginning of July. The Frididaires on display with the coating all had fingerprints in the store, so I wasn't optimistic that I could keep them looking decent at home.
We went with a glass top, but I wish I had the money to put a gas line in. I got a true convection oven. Haven't used the convection part yet, but it bakes beautifully.
French Door fridge. I chose not to have the water/ice in the door. One less thing to break & more available space in the fridge. I keep a Brita water pitcher in the fridge & I'm happy with that.
Honestly, one of the reasons I first started looking at the slate (aside from the fingerprint issues) was that it narrowed my options down to just one company. That relieved a ton of stress for me.
