Do you only use high-quality earrings? I had a tendency to get infections as a kid whenever I wore cheapie earrings, so I'm hesitant to let DD even try. But how common are allergies to different metals, really?
I'm sensitive to nickel (I think?) so I would probably stick to gold or stainless steel just as a preventative measure.
I thought of that right after I posted, dammit. I also thought that I should be more inclusive of different body parts, ie, "if your child has any piercings..."

DD has one of her original earrings and one from my parents that is 14k I think. I'm too lazy to change them lol. But she doesn't seem sensitive, so cheap ones would be fine.
I started DD off on the ones from her piercing session, then she wore 14k for a while. Now she wears whatever - mostly cheap stuff that I could never wear without my earlobes falling off.

I don't have a kid with pierced ears, but I have a nickel allergy. I wear cheapies, but the hypoallergenic ones and I am good. I actually tend to just leave them in until the hypo finish wears off and then I toss them. If she starts saying they are itching or sore, then I would toss and put s new pair in. Or you could spring for the 14k gold ones, but they cost more...
Around 40 I developed a metal allergy that meant even gold and surgical stainless bothered me. I can wear platinum, 18K yellow gold or sterling but only for 8-12 hours. Gone are the days of sleeping in my diamond studs.

Her ears were pierced with 14K gold ones, so that's what she is wearing now. But she's at the "I want to wear all the crappy earrings I see at Claire's" stage.

Oh, interesting. About the developed allergy, I mean. I still sleep in studs and never considered that this might have to change one day.

Yeah, Claire's/Walmart/kohl's have the more "decorative" earrings in multi-packs in the hypoallergenic finish if you can find what she is looking for.

I had a LOT of issues with earrings when I was little so I am very picky on what I put in DD ears. Basically, if I won't wear it now, she doesn't either. I plan to ease up on that a bit when she gets old enough to deal with a possible infection/discomfort that may result from cheaper earrings.
Eta: hypoallergenic doesn't work for me, 14k gold or better only. I can get by with 10k gold for 2-3 hours by my ears get irritated after that.
