I feel like an ass when I don't but they didn't deliver it to me, *I* went to go get it. I always hate that awkward moment when I give the signed slip back to them with no tip.
At some restaurants, servers have to pay taxes as if they were tipped. So if you don't tip, they actually pay to give you your order (albeit a small amount). Plus sometimes the servers have to put everything together and have it ready for you. Sometimes it's the expo's job, though...where there is one. I hate that there's no way of telling which places have that system.
I almost always just add on a dollar or two. I think topping 20% for someone to hand me a bag is just nuts, but I feel like I should do something. But if no one else is doing it, maybe I'll stop.
Yes, usually 10%. They still have to prep to go orders, and depending on the restaurant,N it can take time away from their other (paying) tables, or they bring it out.
I also had to work the carry out counter at a coney place in high school, so there's that influence, too.
Okay if it matters this place is only delivery and takeout, no seating and tables. There are about 5 locations in the metro so it's not a big chain but it's not an independent place either.
Yes, almost always, just a few dollars. I used to pack up to go orders when I was bartending and it can be a pain in the ass, so I always appreciated a tip at pick up.
Wow I had no idea it wasn't customary. I tip every time on take out. But I also tip as well pretty much anywhere they have a jar. If they were polite, worked hard, and provided a service (even getting my food ready)-then I have no issue providing a tip. I know in most restaurants I frequent the employee has to package my food, make certain all utensils etc are included and the order is correct. To me this is still their time (which they are not getting compensated for). So since they are dedicating some time to me then I tip. Also some restaurants the employees that handle take out for each shift are working for tips. Honestly I am probably an over tipper. I just tipped the swim teacher when our course ended. We did private lessons, she was amazing. Do most people not tip in general?

No, I definitely tip and it's always at least usually 20%, sometimes more because I like to round up and make it an even number. If anything DH says I tip too much but for carry out I feel differently.
In my state everyone makes at least minimum wage ($9.xx) so it's not a state where restaurant workers only get paid on tips.
In last night's case we ordered a pizza and bread sticks. They made them, placed them in boxes, put them under a heat lamp and waited for me to walk in to hand them to me. No packing of utensils or anything. I mean what did they do that was beyond their job?? All they do is take out or delivery so it isn't taking time away from their tables either.
Sometimes. If they're extra helpful/ friendly, always if it's delivered to my car (curbside takeout). I rarely ever tip in the tip cups, though. So basically I'm a completely arbitrary really good tipper?
How am I supposed to know if the person giving me my order is being paid like a server expected to make up their wage in tips or like a regular employee whose job it is to facilitate to go orders? I usually get takeout at Cheesecake Factory type places or local counter-style restaurants. At the local places I tip every so often but I'm never sure what to do at the Cheesecake Factory because I have to assume the person who works behind the cheesecake counter where you pick up to go orders makes a minimum wage since they are not waiting on tables.
If I'm signing a receipt with a line for a tip then yes I do.
But many places automatically generate this. I think it's a function of the Credit card machine and not an actual indication of the wage level of the person handling your take out order.
