I have always wanted to be fired in retaliation, however I wouldn't be homeless as a result of it. This poor man. You guys should have heard Tom Joyner talking about this, if you are familiar with his show you can imagine what was said.
A jury has awarded a former employee of Roscoe’s House of Chicken ‘n Waffles more than $1 million in damages after he sued the popular restaurant chain alleging racial discrimination and wrongful termination.
Daniel Beasley, a black man, filed a racial discrimination and wrongful-termination suit against the soul food chain that’s popular with celebrities, including Snoop Dogg and Larry King.
“It’s owned by an African American owner, but he gives full authority to the Hispanics to run it,” Beasley said.
According to Beasley’s lawsuit, managers at the restaurant on Pico Boulevard harassed him for being black and gave preferential treatment to Latino employees, including better schedules.
The grandfather from Compton says he complained to human resources and the company’s owner, but nothing was done.
He was later fired for what he says was retaliation.
“It just caught me by surprise because here I am getting fired when I’m trying to fix the problem,” he said.
Beasley says he became homeless after losing his job.
He and his attorney now hope the jury’s decision sends a clear message to all businesses.
“Racism, racial harassment can occur really anywhere even in a black-owned business,” said Scott Cummings, Beasley’s attorney.
“You can’t treat people like that and get away with it constantly,” Beasley said.
Roscoe’s owns seven locations across Southern California and can appeal the decision.
CBS2 called and left messages during business hours with both Roscoe’s corporate office as well as the business’s attorney but has not heard back.

Why would you want to be fired for retaliation? Because you know you would be hearing cha-ching not too long afterward?
Heads up people - retaliation is such a concern by the EEOC that their investigation charge form includes a separate box for it. If that doesn't mean anything to you, you submit a charge for discrimination by describing what happened to you, and then you check off one or more of these boxes as applies to your situation (this is from memory so there might be more):
Race
Sex
Disability
Age
Religion
National Origin
Retaliation
Good on you Mr. Beasley for trying to do the right thing and also for not allowing yourself to be victimized by a-holes. And note to owners - check your managers before their bad practices drain your pockets!

Wow.
Good fod him filing suit, though I fear the crazies will be like see, it's not just us white folks discriminating against black people, POC discriminate against other POC, and somehow use it as some form of justification of other craziness.
I REALLY don't get why they'd be stupid enough to fire this person. SMH. 'm so glad he was able to find a lawyer to sue and get him such a great payout.

How many restaurants are there owned by this company? Small business owners often have no clue about proper HR practices.
Not that craziness doesn't happen in huge companies too though.

The man says he went to the HR Person. My guess is the manager fired him after the complaint, and YES managers tend to not know about proper practices. I will say it is extra stupid to not at least consult with someone knowledgeable in employment law in a state such as California.

There are 7 Roscoe's in SoCal. They aren't exactly small but it isn't a huge chain either.
Not the point, but the thought of the smell of chicken and waffles together makes me nauseous. So I have never been to one. But I don't eat chicken anyway. I never went to the Gladys Knight version either (when it was around).
Good for him for getting his payday. I feel like he should have gotten more since he was homeless due to it.
I love chicken and waffles. They were good at Gladys' restaurant.

I like Roscoe's, but I love the Brown Sugar Kitchen (Oakland) version.
So "they say" that the owner is involved with the manager at that location who is a Latina woman. Plot thickens.
