The night before they were attacked, Yvonne and Zachary Ervin got a call from one of their sons. He said he and his brother wanted to make the family dinner at their Snellville-area home.
“The mother said this was odd behavior,” according to a Gwinnett County police search warrant obtained Monday, “because the sons had not done this on prior occasions.”
What followed that night, police believe, were Xanax-spiked cocktails. What came the next morning was a brutal assault that left Yvonne Ervin badly beaten, Zachary Ervin stabbed multiple times, and both brothers — 17-year-old Cameron and 22-year-old Christopher — in the Gwinnett County jail.
In the days since the Sept. 5 attack, details about the brothers’ alleged actions have continued to trickle out, first through news releases and incident reports, then through Yvonne Ervin’s frantic 911 call. The search warrant released Monday provides even more insight into the alleged events on Forbes Trail.
Police previously had said that the brothers were “cooperative” during interviews with detectives, but the warrant goes further: It said both admitted to “attempting to set the residence on fire, [attempting to strangle] their parents with a pillow and/or plastic bag, and stabbing the father.”
It also said that “one of the sons … stated that he had been planning this since he was eleven years old.”
The Ervin brothers waived their Friday probable cause hearing in Gwinnett magistrate court. Charged with two counts apiece of aggravated assault and first-degree arson, they are being held at the Gwinnett County jail without bond.
A possible motive in the attack remains unclear. Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution last week that the brothers had hinted at a “bad home life,” but no evidence of that had surfaced.
Family friend Derrick Butts told The AJC that the Ervins had “no issues.”
“If you call a troubled home life having everything you ever wanted, then I’ll take that trouble any day,” Butts said.
Yvonne Ervin was released from the hospital a few days after the attack. Zachary Ervin was released Thursday.
How do you spike someone's cocktail with xanax and then fail to kill them when they're sleeping?
Yes, I know I'm going to hell for even wondering that. Did one of the brothers have a change of heart and it took until morning for the other one to convince him to go through with the plan?
This story is crazy. And can I add that I hate when a 911 call is released? What is the purpose of this? I don't see any reason the general public should be able to hear these calls.
I read this last night and I don't even know what to say about it-- bolded below
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — New information is released concerning two men who are in police custody, accused of trying to kill their parents at their Snellville home.
Police said Yvonne Ervin called 911 at 7:49 a.m. Sept. 5 and told emergency dispatchers that her sons Cameron, 17, and Christopher Ervin, 22, were trying to kill her and her husband, Zachary Ervin. Channel 2’s Tony Thomas learned exclusive details about the case. A detective writes in the search warrant affidavit,"One of the sons also stated that he had been planning this since he was eleven years old." The parents told police "their sons used plastic wrap and plastic bags to try to asphyxiate them" and gave them drugs in cocktails the night before. Over the past week, Thomas detailed how police say Chris and Cameron Ervin tried to blow up their Forbes Trail home earlier this month and, when that didn't work, attacked their parents, Both survived. “This is something that no one that would look at this family would expect this would happen,” Derrick Butts said.
Police also believe the sons tried to burn their parents. Police say Yvonne Ervin told them that "during the attack the sons poured an unknown substance on her and then she felt heat on the back of her leg and she believed this was an attempt to set her on fire."
"A lot of times, my clients do horrible things and I meet them and I say 'yeah I can see why,'” attorney Tom Clegg said. “If in fact my client did what is alleged, it is impossible to figure that out from talking to the young man, because he is just a really quality kid.”
The brothers remain held in jail without bond.
"Just a really quality kid"- who tried to STRAIGHT UP murder his parents by drugging them, tried to light his mom on fire, suffocate them, burn down the house, stabbed them both?? How can he even say that with a straight face? What in the actual fuck?!?!
Just as I was sure there would never be a thread on this. I've been obsessed with this case. It's insane. The 911 call was the worst. Poor Ms. Yvonne. It's clear from their IG pages that they tried to give those slimy bastards a decent life. May they rot under the jail.

I thought of you when I heard about this case. You know it's going to be on the ID channel at some point.
Speaking of which, I watched the one on the twins from Atlanta that mirdered their mother. WTH.
ETA: I'm not making light of it, but this is truly bizarre and the type of case that the ID would do a segment on. I feel for the parents on so many levels.

Yes, they're definitely going to be on that one show--the one where someone tried to kill the victim, but it didn't happen and there are reenactments plus victim interviews? I can't remember the name, but yes. I doubt the parents will want to be interviewed, though. I think they're going to be too embarrassed.
Those twins were legit psychopaths. I think the oldest brother in this case is, too. The youngest brother seems like he just does whatever his brother wants. He at least was remorseful, not that it would matter if I was their mother, because I would never speak to them again, I'm just saying for purposes of outside observation.
Also, I don't think the parents actually fell asleep. She said they were sleepy. It sounds like they were lying down when they attempted to kill them and that got them up, although they were probably sluggish. Remember, the plan was to look like the house caught on fire, so they needed them burned alive, not stabbed, shot, etc.. The stabbing and assault only happened because the parents fought back.
This story is so weird and scary at the same time. I keep wondering are the parents really monsters. My heart just breaks for the family.
I don't think so. If they were, it would be out by now. Plus, I don't think the mother would have mentioned the insurance money as it was happening. That seems like a cover story you might come up with later but not while these maniacs are still trying to kill you. There is a long thread about this on another message board, complete with all kinds of pictures, banter between the kids and parents, I just think they're greedy ass kids. If your parents are monsters, you're not living with them at 22. And then, once you try to kill them and are caught, you don't cry and say, "Kill me. I just tried to fucking kill my parents. Who does that?"

From watching many episodes of "I Survived" stabbing a person to death is a lot more difficult than one would expect.
