During a live Q&A session at Facebook headquarters on Tuesday, Mark Zuckerberg revealed the company is working on a “dislike” button.
Zuckerberg acknowledged people have been asking for a dislike button for several years. This is the first time the company has admitted the button is in development.
“People have asked about the ‘dislike’ button for many years… and probably hundreds of people have asked about this. Today is a special day because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it, and are very close to shipping a test of it,” Zuckerberg said Tuesday during the Q&A session.
“Not every moment is a good moment,” Zuckerberg said. Zuckerberg was also clear that the button won’t be designed to express negative thoughts, but rather “expressing empathy.” The “dislike” button will not be for upvoting or downvoting comments and posts.
“What they really want is the ability to express empathy. Not every moment is a good moment,” Zuckerberg said.
LOL! You mean EllieArroway. She's the god of our little world.
Thanks. I have been asking this for forever. IIRC, Patrick said it was an option but that the admins had declined it, so I don't know why I still think he's the gatekeeper on that. I want it so much!

I'm guessing people will be able to add the option of the dislike button for posts where they are complaining and looking for empathy. At least I hope it won't be on every post. I don't want to know if you don't like my cats!

I will dislike the dislike button. I think it will give people an excuse (or a rationalization, maybe) to post the worst of the worst. Worse than they do now.

What on earth gives you that idea? We LOVE humans. We love how you feed us. We love how you clean our poop. We love how our claws feel when they go in your skin.
What the hell is there to "work on"? A thumbs down is pretty damn simple.
There's a whole lot of possible impact on all the human subjects research Facebook has been semi-secretly conducting on its unsuspecting users without informed consent or any sort of institutional review. That's a lot for them to think through.

I read the thread title to DH and he said "people will murder each other. Guaranteed, within twelve months, someone will kill someone over that". Not exactly a ringing endorsement.
Oh I don't like this. We are already having such issues with cyberbullying in our teens. I'm worried that this will make it even easier.
I wouldn't worry too much about this. Facebook is quickly becoming the domain of old folks like us. Teens have a billion other platforms on which to torture each other.
I don't think that's a good idea at all. We don't need to let the internet steep further into passive aggressive cowardice. I mean, great if it's for "I dislike that you're going through a rough time," but you know a good portion of the time it won't be.
Yeah, I think this is going to bring out the worst in people.
