Just curious! Not really a WWYD, but wondering what others think.
H and I are planning a trip away sans kiddo, kind of to make up for not doing anything for our 5 year anniversary, and hopefully as a babymoon (I'm newly pregnant). We have BA points that will get us free flights to Cabo, so we'd just need a hotel. I've been daydreaming of the Hyatt Ziva los Cabos since crashgizmo posted about it. We've actually never been to an AI, but it sounds fun!
So, we've narrowed down the options:
Book Hyatt now, $1800 for 4 nights. List price for the room is 50% higher, but there always seem to be deals
Reserve cash + points rooms at the Sheraton (much less exciting, but virtually free) and hope that we can book a deal at the Hyatt as we get closer
I really really want to do the Hyatt, and I'm wondering if I'll regret cheaping out by not just booking now. We could also book the $1800 room now and cancel if we can get a better deal later, but it would cost $60 to cancel. FWIW, the website with this deal says it's the last room of that type available.

What time of year are you planning on going? Regardless, I think I would personally just book the Hyatt now. If the price drops significantly, the $60 will be irrelevant. On the flip side, if you book at the Sheraton and the Hyatt price goes up, you'll either end up spending more, or will actually end up at Sheraton not having the vacation you really wanted.
H just booked the Sheraton on cash + points, so that would only end up being about $225, but we can also cancel up to really late. I kind of like the idea of booking the Hyatt too, and eating the $60 if we either decide to save the $$ and use the Sheraton, or find a better deal later on.

My guess is that March will be their high season (spring break time, and all....). So, I don't think I'd assume that I'd end up finding a better deal on the Hyatt.
Either way though, I'm sure you'll have a great time
I would stay where you really want to stay. On a vacation where you'll be spending most of your time on a resort property, being really happy with the resort can make a good trip awesome.
Is the Hyatt refundable? If you can book it now at the high price and it is cancelable, you can always cancel and rebook at a lower rate if the price decreases. I do that all the time. Tingo.com can track the price for you.
Thanks, guys! @sfgal530 and v, I know you're both good at maximizing points, and MH is a junkie with it. I was telling him I'd rather spend the cash on the hotel we want, especially given that we're getting the flights for free. We don't get out on our own much, and I'd rather do what I really want to do. I totally agree on your last sentence, sfgal. Our time is precious right now, and if we're going to bother to arrange a sitter and blow vacation days, I want it to be awesome.
So, as follow up, I texted H, and he agreed that we can book the Hyatt too. We'll just keep looking for a better deal, and if we find it, we'll eat the $60 cancellation fee. The Sheraton is easily cancelled, so we may hang on to it and let the idea simmer a bit.
