My H/stbx I don't know what to call him. Anyway. He had dental surgery if having a tooth pulled. Right after be was massively sweating and woozy and said his gum kind of hurt.
5 minutes into the drive home, he was near tears in pain and no where near still numb. He isn't a crier or a "man cold" kind of guy so I would believe he hurt.
I asked him how much numbing stuff the dentist gave, he said 2 shots. I asked if any in jaw joint to numb half of that side, he said no.
I find this odd. I had a cavity recently filled at my dentist and he did gums and into jaw joint.
Am I wrong to think it should have been more numb? I was not impressed with this place in general but this bothers me. I feel like it shouldn't have hurt/worn off so soon.
Eta: obviously it would hurt at some point but I wasn't expecting it to be 10 minutes after he was done. It could be my not impressed with their personalities that is making this a bigger deal than it is.
Normally, it stays numb for another hour or so and the pain shouldn't be that bad. Is your H resistant to pain killers? I often ask for an extra shot to be sure I won't feel too much pain.
He most likely had an abscess associated with that tooth. It is much more difficult to get numb an area around a tooth and keep numb with an abscess. He should not have been in that much pain under normal circumstances (without an abscess).

I believe if it's a tooth on the top, they can just numb that tooth/surrounding area directly. If it's on the bottom, they have to numb the whole jaw. I've never had a tooth pulled but that's been the case for all other dental work I've ever had.
I agree though that having pain 5 minutes after the procedure seems strange. Does he normally have a higher tolerance for pain medications? Some people don't respond the same.

I haven't had a tooth pulled, but I had a root canal where they could not get the nerve numb. They even tried injecting novocaine straight into the nerve, which was horrible. Some people just have a higher tolerance for novocaine. I typically ask for double the amount that they normally use, and I've still felt pain during drilling.

I'm a freak of nature according to every dentist I've seen., I needed 15 shots of Novocain to have 5 fillings. 3 on each tooth. They have to wait until they are ready to work on that tooth. It wears off really quick. They do 2 at the beginning and 1 midway. I had feeling in my gums before I made it home 30 mins away. Some people have longer nerves and thicker bone. It can cause the Novican not as effective.

Me too. they had to sedate me for my root canal. It was awful.

When I have had dental work, the goal was to numb for the procedure, not to keep it numb for long. Was he numb for the procedure?
It does typically last longer. I have always tried to get on meds before the Novocain wears off, which sucks because it means you have to eat something (like apple sauce or yogurt) within a half hour/hour + run to the pharmacy.

Was the tooth pulled for an abscess like the pp suggested? I had two wisdom teeth pulled last month, both on top. I was SO numb for it, it freaked me out at first (it included my palate and up into one of my sinuses), but it also didn't last too long. It didn't really hurt much once it wore off, though. Your STBX's situation doesn't seem normal.
It also depends on how quickly your body metabolizes the shot. My dentist has practiced for 40+ years and said I was the only patient that had ever needed 3 shots to prep just one tooth for a crown.
But, no, he shouldn't have been in that much pain within minutes. I wouldn't be seeing that dentist again.
People metabolize numbing drugs at different rates, so if you remain numb and hour afterwards doesn't mean everyone should. I know I metabolize it very quickly. So it's very possible that your H/stbx is one of these people too.
My dentist always suggested that I get some meds in me before the numbing wore off, to start taking them before I started hurting. I think I downed them while still in the office (it was ibuprofen, but effective). Once you get behind the pain, it's a lot harder to get it back under control.
