When my actual cards have been stolen, one did lots of small amounts ranging $60-150 and my other card had sever under $20 charges before they went for a $900 charge.

Huh, strange.
I used the Square credit card service that small retailers have, and when I swiped my card, it asked if I wanted to have my receipt emailed to me at an email address it had registered for me ending in "@aol.com." Ummmm... I do not have an email address with that extension; the only time that I did have an AOL email, I was not old enough to have a credit card.

Weird. I wonder if it could be the case of a sales associate having to enter a card number by hand for some reason and accidentally transposing two digits. But being in your geographical area is weird. Hmm. I hope it's easily fixable.
ETA: Oh but it's *not* your card number. Hmm. Yes hopefully it's something like @bluesky's case then.

Have you called your CC company to see if there was any activity? If so, I'd cancel and order a card. If not, I'd let it go and just keep an eye on activity.

TOLEDO'S CARD WASN'T USED.
You people.
So the email says. I'm just saying a transposed number in the email is a possibility as valid as any internal glitch in this cluster of a situation.

Even if the customers email address wasn't added to the CC today, it could have happened at a previous shopping trip and you just didn't catch that receipt. I know that every time I have to give my email at checkout it takes the cashier 1-2 tries before they get it right, so it would be easy for a typo to slip through.
At this point, I'm leaning more toward a new cc was opened in my name. I'm going to order a credit report.
I highly recommend creditkarma.com. they email me anytime a big purchase or deposit happens in any account, plus I can see all credit checks, full report, etc. Whenever I want

My toys r us rewards number has been weirdly linked to my husband's cousin's wife's. I tried to clear it up about a year ago when I got her rewards dollars by email but then just yesterday I was emailed an ereceipt from apparently a purchase she made.
We were pregnant at the same time 8 years ago and were both registered at babies r us but that is really the only link. We don't even have the same last name. Freaky.

On the receipt they sent to you, are you able to see the actual signature? I know you said your name is on the receipt, I assumed you meant like printed directly by the register - but are you able to tell if it looks like the person made an attempt to sign your actual name?
I had a similar thing at Macy's like @bluesky at Sears.
I received an email receipt, but wasn't there. It wasn't my card either.
They give you the option for an email receipt, but YOU type it in yourself. The customer could have just typed the wrong email address.
This is what happened. I work for an online retailer and sometimes people enter their email address incorrectly at checkout. This results in 2 calls for us.
1. The original purchaser is mad that we never sent an email confirmation.
2. If the email typo is another legit email address the person who receives the confirmation for a purchase they didn't make freaks right out and assumes fraud.
The similar last four digits of the card is weird though.

Ugh. It does sound like a card was opened in your name. Is there anything on your credit report to that effect? I don't know how long new accounts take to show up.

Did it actually show up on YOUR card?
ETA - no now it sounds like something else weird is going on... Why would someone open an account in your name, and use YOUR email for the account? Wouldn't that tip you off REALLY fast that there was something amiss?
It was not a customer error, guys. I already said that the store rep said the customer was not asked for the email address.
Also, I have since received two other email receipts for other purchases at this store today.
The fact that there are now 3 transactions at 1 store makes me think that they may have a computer glitch/problem of some sort.
I kind of agree with this. I mean, if I was using a stolen or fraudulent card or whatever, I wouldn't be checking the box to send an email receipt to the name on the account, you know? I'd take my paper copy and hope not to get caught like a normal criminal.
Strange. I understand they are saying that the email address wasn't captured at point of sale today- that it's attached to the card info-- but it would have had to be entered at some point somewhere with that retailer. I mean- it's not as if you (general you) get email notifications automatically every time you use a credit card. So maybe it's possible this person mistyped the email address at some other time when registering for an online account at the stores website or something?? I don't know.
Sort of related-- a few months ago someone used my email address to start a tumblr and twitter accounts and that was annoying.

Hope you clear it up soon with no damage to you.
My email is linked to my ex husband's Reward card so I know every time he bribes the kids with expensive toy trips.

Well, it may be the default, but also, some ppl are really dumb. We found out about an account that was opened in DH's name when a laptop showed up at our door. They had ordered several laptops on individual orders, and apparently on this one, they checked "shipping address same as billing address." If not for that, whi knows how long it would've been until we found out?
