I feel like this article is a bit all over the place, but some of the key points are good. It doesn't make sense to train all PhD students as if they'll become professors. Universities don't do a great job integrating with communities. The ongoing digital information revolution is going to shake education to its core, with universities/colleges impacted already but likely to see a lot more changes in coming years.
I've read this article four times now. I'm still not sure what I'm supposed to be taking from it. Train students to be more than just professors? Ok. That's not new. What I would rather see a) suggestions on how to actually do this, and b) a notice of the fact that a lot of PhD programs are simply taking on too many students.
I will say that I am TIRED of the criticism that academia is too insular and doesn't collaborate. In my field we try to collaborate all the time. We are constantly met with resistance and belittling from people in the industry (media). Don't put the onus all on academia for this failing.
