We only had two, homecoming which was not formal and only lower classmen and drunk football players attended, and prom, which was easily a $600+ occasion per person.
I went to prom 2 years and homecoming when I was younger.

I went to all of them. Damn did I love dancing to the finest of the 90's. Every time I hear Crossroads it makes be want to slow dance and "make room for the Holy Spirit!"
@vicmo No, but I've seen one in the wild and literally thought I was being proposed marriage to.
I was driving to my parent's house, back when H and I lived together (in sin, obvi). It was a route I took every weekend to go there, which H knew. So there were big huge signs on street light poles along the way that said, "My first name. Will. You..." I'm fairly certain I stopped breathing. Until the next signs said "Go. To. Prom. With. Me." Womp womp.

Yes but usually with one of my gay theater friends or the girls. For senior prom my big brother insisted I have a real date so he asked his friend to take me.
Most...I decided after Junior year homecoming that I wasn't going to any more formal ones...because I wanted to only date older guys only (& only did). And no way was I willing to take an older guy to my HS dances..any guy that lame as to be willing I wouldn't date...lol. But I got peer pressured by friends into going to Senior prom...I got asked by one of the guys of turned down before for other dances & accepted. I thought he had guts to ask me again. I went strictly "as friends" though (in my mind) and wasn't the nicest date. I did like the informal dances because guys from other schools came--fresh meat! Lol. I was pretty much completely uninterested in any guy in my (small) HS after Soph year.
I went to most. It was kind of funny because I asked three different guys to dances my senior year (as friends, but I had a huge crush on one of them and would have happily gone out with any of the three). A year later, all three had told me they were gay. Apparently I have a type.
I went to the major ones junior and senior year (homecoming and prom).
At my parents' URGING ("any guy would be LUCKY to go out with you!!!!") I worked up my courage and asked a guy to homecoming freshman year. He responded with a firm no. That pretty much ruined dances for me until someone asked me out junior year.
We had 3 per year, but prom was mainly for junior & seniors.
So out of the 10 formals, I went to 7 of them. All with the same boyfriend (yawn) as we started dating middle of sophomore year.
ETA: Yes, we asked & answered in over-the-top ways. In addition to the 3 formals per year, we had monthly dances. These did not require dates and we usually just went in big groups of friends. Some were holiday themed, others were just "normal" (i.e. dress in the shortest skirts and smallest tops you can get away with)

I loved middle school dances. I went to two in high school, and then I went to the prom. I went with my friends little brother. For decades the prom was held in a tent on the football field. People from the town would come and watch the couples walk down the driveway.
@awinter, did you ever get to witness this? Do you know when they stopped?
I went to most. Homecoming, proms, Sadie Hawkins, etc. The occasional random no real theme one I would usually skip though.
I had never heard of a promposal until my younger sisters (both now in college) got them. They seem a little much. I dated the same guy for three years in HS so he never really asked me to any of them, it was just assumed and that worked for me.
No. I was basically the freak girl from The Breakfast Club in high school. My friends and I scoffed at dances (and I'm sure we were terribly obnoxious about it...I was not my best self in high school). Instead of going to prom, we got all dressed out and had a fancy night out to the theater for dinner and a musical at a big theater in LA. It was great!

I went to almost all of them. Freshman and Senior year with my boyfriends at the time and the middle years with random guy friends.
I avoided a big prom-propsal type ask by running into the class president in the parking lot before school with a big bouquet of flowers, so he was forced to just ask me there rather than in front of the whole school at the assembly/rally we were having that day like his original plan was. I was sooooo relieved, since I'm a major introvert and hate attention like that.

School dances were a huge thing for our high school. Plus I was in leadership so we all kind of "had" to go. It set a good example for school spirit, etc. They were fun!
I went to most - I think I had a date twice or something like that. I enjoyed getting dressed up and going with a group of friends.
I also was on student government and worked coat check for every dance freshmen year and a few sophomore year. I often enjoyed coat check more than the actual dance.
