Help me shop for Dresser/Nightstands

When we moved into our house 2 years ago we had a hand-me down mattress, metal bed frame, and dressers/nightstands we bought at a yard sale for $40 total.

We splurged on a good mattress and this PB bed (the top can also be removed so it is no longer canopy but right now the canopy is set up). I don't plan on replacing the bed for years and years unless it falls apart

However, for the past year we've still had our very worn out dressers/nightstands. They are not real wood so we can't really refurbish them or anything.

We need to buy 2 dressers and 2 nightstands but everything I look at is so pricey. The PB dressers are each as much of the bed and the nightstands are like $400 a piece. Also, I'm not sure I really want a matched "set". We have white crown molding, white curtains, white closet doors in the room so maybe some white furniture would lighten up the espresso bed?

Any suggestions about where to get good quality dressers/nightstands for less $ would be appreciated, thanks!

I refinished dressers from CL and painted them white. I think they are so much more interesting than new dressers, and very MM.



I don't have a good "after" of the other dresser, but here's what it looked like before I refinished it:



We have these chests from Pier 1 as nightstands. I love that I can put a lot of stuff in the drawers and they have a nice, substantial top.



I don't like matchy-matchy furniture.

I like the refinsihed dressers, I'm just having trouble finding ones to refinish which have similar style (not everything being the same style but if I'm getting 2 dressers and 2 nightstands I'd like them to be somewhat similar but not matching). If I did everything but the bed in white would that look weird?

I would just start stalking Craigslist. (if you have the time to paint/refinish). We painted hand me down furniture and I love it. I like the non matching look. I'm also against paying $$ for new home store furniture so Craigslist was where we found our stuff.

I think that would be pretty. Maybe find matching dressers and non match night stands?

I love white furniture, but if you want to tie in the bed a little more, how do you feel about doing white dressers with an espresso-stained top?

Oh the espresso tops are nice! How do you do them? I am a little DIY challeneged.
