Houston, TX (August 22, 2012) – As Arizona and Nebraska block rights extended to the DREAM Act generation via President Obama’s plan for Deferred Action, Texas nonprofit Protectors of the Dream takes action for Deferred Action. Only 2 weeks old, the newly created nonprofit is proud to announce that it has raised $80,000-enough for over 160 grants for Deferred Action filing fees in this first round. The awards are in the amount of $465, the cost of the required filing fee.
Protectors of the Dream is Bi-Partisan with Democrats and Republicans working together:
The Protectors of the Dream is a nonprofit organization comprised of leaders from the Houston business, legal, and activist community who have united across political and socio-economic lines to support the young students who are putting their trust in the government and stepping out of the shadows.
The co-founders are Tony Diaz and Jacob Monty. Tony Diaz is known for his Liberal activism defending culture and art. These projects range from leading the Librotraficante Movement in smuggling banned books into Arizona to challenging a Harris County Ordinance that prohibited piñatas on county park grounds.
Jacob Monty is Mexican-American lawyer with Monty & Ramirez LLP who has raised money and support for George W. Bush and John McCain.
“People are not shocked to see me involved in this issue,” said Tony Diaz, El Librotraficante. “But they are surprised to see which Party I brought to the party. But this is an example of the new alliances we must create to preserve the American Dream for all of our young. I also firmly believe both parties must cater to community.”
“I’m a Republican activist, so Tony and I don’t agree on a whole lot,” Monty says. “This is something that is not a party issue. Regrettably, Republicans are on the wrong side of this thing. The business community is embracing it.”
Deadline for this round of applications is August 31. Winners will be announced September 17. 160 grants will be awarded in this round. All students who are eligible to apply for the Deferred Action program and live in Houston, Texas or the greater metropolitan area are eligible to apply. More grants will be awarded to a larger pool of applicants in the next round.
