I love how people think that someone deserves a second shot simply because they happen to be good at something (and their talent has already been discovered. What if the other people they're putting in jail have some un-tapped potential to be a freakin' brain surgeon!?)
And I hate the emphasis we put on sports. If this guy was looking at scholarships for art or cooking or science... this wouldn't even be an article. But GOD FORBID WE LOSE A BASKETBALL STAR!
and by "ha ha" i mean "holy shit, what the hell is wrong with this country."
i can maybe i guess but not really sort of see why the girlfriend and parents would ask for leniency in terms of "how about SOME jail time, but not 3 years," but i'm a little baffled by their stance too. every article about the case i just quickly googled, however, is all "blah blah he was a standout starting his freshman year" and minimal details about the case.
The entire courtroom scene is depressing and painfully hard to watch because Farmer had such a bright future prior to this incident.
Oooooohhhhhh... see, I took that to mean that it's depressing that even with the "good kids", you don't know, they could secretly be pieces of shit.
Me too. And I think a person can think it's a shame that a person with so much ahead of them acted like such a complete asshole and still no feel sorry for said asshole.
Don't feel sorry for him in the least. I hope he serves the full 3-years, and if he doesn't the NCAA, and all other schools, should pass him up for scholarship. There are more deserving, while most likely not as tall or as good of an athlete, high schoolers out there in need of a scholarship. If college ball was that important to him he would have thought about that before he tried to play soccer with his girlfriends face.
When it came time for Farmer to speak, he turned and faced the gallery, apologizing to Lane, her family and to his family.
He then told the judge, "I'm really not a bad kid," and asked for the chance to finish his senior year in high school so he could earn a basketball scholarship.
But Barker reminded him that the security video from the apartment building shows him kicking Lane in the head as she cowers in a corner.
"You can see the fear on her face," the judge said.
I wonder if the line of adults (including parents and teachers) who cut him a break every time he didn't do something because he was good at basketball will realize they contributed to this sense of entitlement.

DH actually called me and was all, "Dude! You have GOT to go to Yahoo..."
I get and agree that it's depressing in the sense of 'great potential wasted' but seriously! Only 3 freaking years for kidnap, theft and an assortment of other gems? And with good behavior that puts him getting out before 20, right?
Still plenty of time for him to build a lovely career as an entitled NBA douchebag.

Let's get real here, though - it's not like he was looking to be the next Jonas Salk. He was just a kid who was going to maybe have a career tossing a ball through a hoop. The potential is dubious.

I am sad her parents are in favor of lienency.
I agree. What's the point of punishment if there really ISN'T any punishment? I don't think any lesson would be learned if he was actually shown lienency. He'd just get away w/ yet one more thing.

Seriously. He's a douche who deserves to serve his time just like every other idiot who beat women. The fact that he can play basketball well is a moot point.

Exactly.
Nope. I don't feel sorry for him. Not one little bit.
