SO loves it but I recently had him switch over to 30 day shred with me.
I've only done insanity once so I don't have any results to share. it kicked my ass but I just didn't like the guy - I thought he was too aggressive/not motivating at all. If I could have gotten over that hang up, I'm sure it could have made for a very effective workout regimen.
I think that anything that gets you moving, that you can commit to (and might even enjoy), is a good thing. At the very least, it's better than nothing.
I am a huge fan, though, of heavy lifting being a part of everyone's repertoire, so I would recommend any of the New Rules of Lifting books.

DH and I did 5/6 weeks before we had to go out of town for a funeral. It definitely made us stronger and have more endurance, but neither of us really lost any weight. According to the magical fat % scale I did lose quite a bit of fat.

I never did it, but a friend of mine from HS did. I wish I could post a pic. She is less than half her size. It is absolutely incredible. She was very diligent, though. She followed the program very closely & was super strict. Like I offered her 3 M&Ms and she said no, she had already had her daily sweets. So if you stick to any program that closely, you’ll get results.

I just started week 6. I like that the first 5 weeks are short workouts, around 45 mins as compared to the P90X hour+ (I did P90X earlier this year). I'm with pp, I'm not a Shawn T fan in terms of motivation. He repeats himself a lot and says "yall" all the time and I'm a southerner so used to the term but it just gets to me. Don't get discouraged if you can't keep up - your body builds and day after day you'll notice you can do more and more. The fit test is a good gauge at how far you've come.
ETA - I lost 14# on P90X and continued with Insanity. Since starting Insanity, I've only lost around 6# but my clothing sizes have changed significantly - from a 12 to a loose 8 in pants.

I have a colleague that has the DVDs, and she brought them into the office. We did two of the workouts together but I found them really, really hard to do.
I didn't like the guy and I wasn't a fan of the routine. One of the routines we did called for doing the same routine 3x, but each one was faster than before.
I was sore for four days after doing that one.
Personally, I was not a fan because I found it too hard. I love 30 day shred which I also have - and I cna do that no problem.
I bought the workout last year and completed the first month. Then we went on vacation and I tried to get back into it but couldn't. We have another vacation coming up in September so I hope to start again after that.
I did lose a bunch of inches and I was asked numerous times how much weight I had lost. I only lost about 10# in that month (I have a lot to lose) but I definitely did get toned.
I also like the fact that the workouts can be modified a little if you can't do a move. I had to do that for some of it. I also like that I didn't need any extra equipment. We really don't have the space for anything else so it was nice to be able to push the table aside in the living room and do my workout.
I have done the whole series of 60 days, but stretched it out over a much longer time period - like 4-5 months. I now do the DVDs in between other exercise, mixing between treadmill, 30 day shred, etc.
I really really like the workouts. I mean, I hate them because they are hard, but that's exactly why you should like them.
My biggest issue is that the exercises are generally pretty hard on your knees, lots of jumping. So that (and time) is why I couldn't do the workouts every day. I would do 2 or 3 days in a row, then have to take a break.
If you're serious about doing them regularly, actually doing the exercises as well as you can, and combing with healthy eating, you should see results quickly. It's amazing how hard the first one is, then it gets progressively better and you find you can keep up the whole time.
ETA: That should be "combining" with health eating. oops.
I'm doing Insanity with my husband right now. I love that its such a short workout. We did P90x earlier this year and its been a nice change. I don't think the workouts are -that- hard (I found P90x to be more difficult), but they get monotonous.
I know month 2 is supposed to be brutal, but I'm looking forward to it because I'm starting to get a bit bored.
Results-wise, my cardio has definitely improved. However, I haven't been following a good diet which I suspect is hampering my overall results.
My favorite is pure cardio--it seems to take no time at all to do and I think its fun.
