DS1 is 4.5. On a car trip at the beginning of August I let him have my cell phone in the car and pick out a game to download to keep him occupied. He picked Angry Birds. Since that day, it has become almost all consuming to him. I am almost positive it is all he thinks about. We limit how much he is allowed to play (probably 30 minutes over the course of an entire day-probably 4x a week), but even when he's not playing he is incessantly talking about it. What he did, how he did it, what he'll do next, when he can play again.
He's never been into games or anything before this, and I thought the novelty would wear off. But OMG. If I heard about these damn birds one more time, I'm going to go crazy.
Anyone have a kiddo that can't focus on anything else once he/she finds something they like?
Honestly, we're pretty lax on the weekend. He'll play an hour or two in the morning, maybe more while DD naps, and a bit before bed. It's really too much, but typically, the obsessions pass in a few weeks.
Honestly, I wouldn't care so much if he was able to simmer it down ever once in a while. I think since it's portable, he feels like he has access to it at all times. I hope it dies down soon, because I know way to much about that stupid game considering I've never played.
And yeah, there's no learning happening with Angry Birds, unfortunately. lol.
I think my kids are still too young for this, but when my nephews first learned Plants v Zombies (at around age 4.5) one of them was exactly the same as yiu describe your son. It honestly took months before his interest waned.

Mindcraft for DS. DD is more well rounded. My nephew was obsessed with angry birds for a couple of years. He has moved on now. Make sure you have it password protected for purchases. DS accidentally bought $20 worth of Angry Bird imaginary crap one time when he was 3 and using DH's phone.

Yeah, we did this pretty quick thankfully. DS is all, "I have money in my piggy bank! I'll buy what I want!!!". lol, no.
We've had a train table and trains forever, and DS has played with them on and off. ILs visited a few months ago, and FIL is train obsessed. He made DS new tracks every day, and they took him to the railroad museum. He's had a one track mind (pun intended!) ever since. It was bizarre, because he was obsessed with monster trucks just prior, and now he won't even wear a monster truck t-shirt. He gets a little iPad time after bath, and he's been watching these weird YouTube videos with a guy picking out and buying trains with his son. He tells us all the time which "playset" he wants next.
Modern kids crack me up. Instead of saying he wants Santa to bring/the elves to make XYZ train set, he says he wants Santa to go to Target and get it.

DS2 is obsessed with my ponytail. He is almost 3. He calls it my ponyhair. He touches it, rubs it against his cheeks, brings over various toys and stuff to brush against it. He calls me out whenever I wear my hair down (which admittedly is rare) or if it is wet after a morning shower. He wants me to carry him just so he can touch my ponyhair. He tells it goodnight.
This has been going on for an entire year. I remember it ramping up when we were at my sister's wedding last October. I thought that surely it was a phase and he would grow out of it. No such luck.
DS is really really into this game called Monument Valley. It's so pretty.
He's also obsessed with our recent Disney trip and goes on and on about Soarin and says things to his stuffed animals like " Please exit to the right, gather your belongings and take small children by the hand"
My DS has been train obsessed since he was about 5 months old and got his first G gauge set.
We have a tourist railroad local to us where DS spent many a happy afternoon. When he was in preschool he used to tell me he "would do anything to work there when he got big- even clean the toilets". He got a job last summer. About two weeks in he came home with an ear to ear grin and said "remember how I used to say I would clean toilets to get a job at the railroad? mission accomplished". I hope he gets a real job when he graduates, but he's a happy camper for now.

If I could go back in time and never show my kids this video, I would.
I think we discovered it when DD1 was around 2. It was funny at first but OVER THREE YEARS LATER she still asks for it all the time. And DD2 is in on it now as well.
lol @ some of these. I think this thread has helped solidify my feelings that my kid is normal and that all kids are weird. Glad to know it's not just him. Thanks all.
DS has been obsessed with playing guitar since he turned 1. We even got him an actual children's guitar for his second birthday, and it is STILL played every.single.day.
He plays so often, his thumb actually blistered and then calloused.
Unfortunately - he's no good at it. I'm counting down the days until he's even remotely old enough to go to lessons and learn some actual chords.

We have an outback that whoever has DS drives. During the week that's usually me. dH takes a blue Toyota Echo during the week. A couple weeks ago dH had to take DS in the echo. OMG, it's been nothing but "blue car! Blue car! I see blue car ? " since then! He asks about it all evening long until DH gets home with it. Could be worse , but still annoying.
