Junior kindergarten - 4 yrs old No fever. Never fever for the last 2 weeks. 2 weeks of sniffle and mild cough. Went to school. Last night 30 min of bad coughing. Wouldn't stop. She seemed to sleep thru most of it. My H and I did not. Gave her water and opened the window for some humidity and she then stopped coughing and slept. Today. School? On the one hand, coughs stick around forever. I can't keep her home for 2/4 weeks. On the other hand, every day she mentions a different kid who stayed home. Important fact. We have no one to look after her. But we could maybe string something together
Coughs are always worse at night. I wouldn't keep her home just for that if there is no fever and she generally feels okay.
Thanks. It was actually helpful to write it out and see how non serious it was. I just feel bad sending her with a cough. But if I kept her home, it would be 2 weeks now. And days of rest don't seem to make any difference. But she told me the teacher said 'L why are you coughing ?' Sounds like a caring question (if you give it the right tone) but made me feel bad.
Does it sound like she is coughing up a lung? Or just coughing? For former I *might* keep her home. Not for the latter.
This is the hardest part. I'm not home this morning. My husband usually suggests keeping her home for a sniffle. I think cough syrup plus school. thanks
I only ask because plenty of teachers will send kids to the office when they are consistently coughing really hard. But a slight cough with some cough syrup, meh, send her.
I'm in the same boat, and I'm sending DS to school today. He's been out of school for a week. He's in good spirits and full of energy, but a lingering cough. His coughs hang around forever. I told his teacher "the cough sounds worse than it is." He's also got a cut and Band-Aid on his middle finger, I apologized in advance in case he shows that to anyone
My kid would not stay home under the circumstances you are describing. This is her first time in a school environment, right? I think it's acceptable to send them unless they have fever, are vomiting or have some other contagious disease, like strep. We would have a kid home once a week in the winter if we kept them home for coughs and sniffle.
We do give Benadryl at night. It reduces the dripping and helps them sleep.
A cough or runny nose and no other symptoms? I send DS to school. But "other symptoms" means overall mood too. If he's CLEARLY tired/ low energy/ not himself, I'll give him at least a day at home to just rest and take it easy. I know how useless I am when I'm sick. it's not just about the fever.
