Whenever they are going through a change of development as a baby. And then as they get older if they have been really good and are interested in a new type of toy. (My oldest is only 4 though so after that I'm not sure)
When I find good deals. Probably a couple times a month. They're not always big toys. Last weekend she got new coloring books, flue sticks, glitter paper, new water paints, etc. Today in the mail I got some magnetic dolls because they were a good deal on Amazon. It just depends.
OMG, way too often until recently. I swear every time H went to target he came back with more toys. Now we have eleventy gagillion and have finally stopped buying him more. He'll get a few at Christmas and his birthday, but I think we're done for a while.

My mom will get him something for birthdays & Xmas only.
I got him a couple of things this summer, based on his interests changing, like rubber dinosaurs and some trucks. We got him Cranky the Crane to celebrate giving up night binky.
We look at toys at Target now, and I noticed he will now ask for something each trip.
He won't get anything until Xmas. Since he's turning 3, I think we will follow the guide where he will get 3 things.

My oldest has a December birthday. Since it's so close to Christmas, he usually gets a few new toys in the summer based on his interest. I will buy my kids toys if they become interested in something new.
I don't feel the need to buy expensive birthday and Christmas gifts. My son wants an electric toothbrush, new toothpaste that he doesn't have to share with his sister, and floss for his 6th birthday.
We buy Lego sets on a regular basis for our sanity. Sunday during football he got a set which kept him occupied for an entire game and he is still working on it.
My mom and MIL buy my daughter at least two new toys a week. They each pick her up two days a week from school, and she's constantly coming home with new stuff. I put my foot down this week and told them that she is not to get any new toys until her birthday in December -- but of course DD came home with dress-up shoes today, and told me "Well, they're not toys, they're shoes!"
Rarely. Mostly because I don't have a place to put them. If I had a play room like spk926 does I'd be so screwed. Ha.
Now I want to see this playroom.
I know she's posted it before. It's basically like the formal front living room of her house, but filled with all the toys I would buy if I had a place for them.
I rarely buy anything! We have plenty from gifts and I feel like we're not home much. (One weekend day seems to be absorbed by errands, and she's home to play maybe 30 minutes per weekday.) Plus, when we are home, she prefers to play with things that aren't toys.
Almost never from us. We bought bubbles and a beach ball this past weekend, and before that was sand toys in June. My mom visits every 3 months or so and usually brings something. My in laws probably bring or send something with similar frequency. MIL sends clothes at the change of the season.

Whenever I get bored with what we have. Sometimes it's months, sometimes its a little less often. I don't count stickers as toys and we seem to buy those the most right now
