Before school started , we paid the nanny $550 per week for 44/50hours. At least one day a week over the summer, she had off because my parents took L. She also had a free paid week in July and 3days in August. Now she gets $450 per week for drop off and pick up mon-Friday. We have already cancelled Mondays for the next. 6-8 weeks because of after school program (I am home by the time it ends). No change in pay. Last week I was of Thursday so I gave her the day. Basically we are nice employers. (I like to think)
Today, we asked her to pick up L early due to her cold. She worked 1-3pm extra. Should I pay her for those hours? She did us a favour. On the one hand, she is obviously being paid adequately and fairly. On the other hand, without being paid, next time, there is no reason to do us this favour. So pay her $20???
For me it depends on the type of relationship you have with her. If she is relatively new then you probably need to pay her. If she has been with you for years and she knows she isn't working the next 6-8 Monday's even though you are paying her for them then I think you could call it even. Our nanny also does before school care and after school care. We pay her almost the same as when she was working full time for us but part of the agreement is that she covers all sick days and all minor holidays. If my kid was sick for an entire a week I would pay extra but if it was one day or less I wouldn't.
Eeek! I can't believe you pay that much just for school drop-off and pick-up? Did you try to find a Grade 7 or 8 kid at her school? We pay the Grade 8 girl that lives on our court $20/week to pick C up at our house and walk her to school, and then we pay another girl in Grade 9 $5/day to walk C (along with a few other kids) home from school and play at one of the kids' houses until parents come.
She comes at 7am and gets her dressed and fed. 2 nights a week, I'm not home until 8pm so she feeds her and bathes her and puts her in bed. But before it was 7-4 or 10-8 for only $100 more. We tried to find a high school kid and then they could have just come at 730/8 but no luck. We are super happy to be saving $500 a month (no metro pass either) but it's still crazy
Is it worth $20 to be able to have her do this again? Next time she'll remember if she made a little extra or not. She won't remember that you had just given her 6 Mondays off.
@hannymaren is that weekly rate the norm in the GTO? I'm in YVR and we are paying $16/hr on the books for two kids. It's a lot for our budget but I also feel like her take home, $525ish/week, is barely liveable in this city. I thought GTO would be more or the same as Vancouver.

We used to pay $14.50 plus tax for our old nanny. She was by the hour. This nanny preferred the salary option.
