I signed up for a free trial on ancestry.com. It was fun to put stuff together to make a family tree for my son. I was able to go back many generations on my mom's side, but only a few on my dad's side before not finding any additional information. In my opinion, you have to go through a lot of random information about random people to find the good stuff. I didn't continue with a membership after my trial. You really can spend many hours searching for information if you get really into it.
Someone else recently asked about this. My advice basically boiled down to 1) see what you can do for free through your library. Some even have Ancestry Library edition and then you can decide if you want your own account. You can't make your own trees with the library one and 2) googling relatives through Google Books. I found some History of X County that had when a family immigrated, name of boat, etc. Familysearch is free. There is some stuff on there I didn't find on Ancestry and vice versa.

Yes. I managed to link up on ancestry with someone who has info on my dad's side. MIL is a genealogy junkie, so she helped as well. I just reached out to a historical society for information on the black hole that I my great grandfather
I use Ancestry and have gone back as far as the 1700's in my family. The information on Ancestry is endless and it practically does the work for you. I've found almost 1,500 relatives and each day I log in I get more leaves (hints) and find more info. For me it's definitely worth the $20/month.
