If you carry on, I think they can hang garment bags for you.
I know that's true in 1st class but it hasn't always been my experience in coach. I'm flying JetBlue though and they are typically better customer service wise.
Although, can I tell you how little I'm looking forward to carrying my garmet bag, DD's carseat, DD, 2x bookbags between DH and me through 3 airports? Sigh.
I always put the things that are absolutely essential in a carry-on. You can get the garment bags that fold in half and they can usually fit in the overhead compartment.

We did this when we were wedding guests. They actually hung it for us at the front but it did fold if necessary.
Well crap. I'm flying to my brother's wedding next week and hadn't even thought about this. I'll probably still check my bridesmaid dress in checked luggage. I don't feel like dealing with a dress in addition to flying with a toddler and infant!
I fold it in half in brown paper like my grandmother taught me and put it in my carry on. Then put it in the bathroom with a HOT shower for 20 minutes. Never wrinkles!
I bring my travel steamer with me 99% of the time I travel and it's easy peasy.
Except that I have no travel steamer. Hence, more $.
I've tried the shower trick before and might try that again.
They are pretty cheap and def cheaper then sending burnout to be steamed:) What kind of fabric is the dress? The shower thing might work better for some fabrics than others.
I had mine shipped to my family near the destination & it worked wonderfully. My mom even dropped it off to be steamed. It was a full length A-line satin gown. If I had packed it in my carry-on, I would have had little room left!
Considering that you're flying with a toddler, a car seat, and have a layover, if you have family at the destination, I'd ship it to them.
I was once on a flight where a bridesmaid got escorted off the plane by police. She refused to sit down for take off because she kept checking the dress in the overhead bin. She wouldn't let them hang it and slapped the flight attendant's hand when she tried to help her move it.
When I've travelled with dresses they've always hung it with the jackets or in the first class locker area.
