I already mentioned that I emailed this chode early Monday morning. Before the national calls for him to step aside, I thought little old me might as well give my two cents.
It was along the lines of "I was considering a vote for you, as I would like to see Claire McCaskill out of office. I absolutely cannot ever vote for you now based upon your comments yesterday. I respectfully ask that you see the big picture and step aside so that voters like myself will have another viable option besides McCaskill...yada yada."
The response: Dear _______:
I was completely wrong to use the term "legitimate" and "rape" in the same sentence. There is no rape that is legitimate. What I said was ill-conceived, wrong and it hurt people. For that I apologize. I was also wrong when I said women's bodies have a way to stave off pregnancy in the event of "legitimate rape." I was misinformed, and I recognize that. However, I do not apologize for my belief in being pro-life and the protection of the unborn.
I appreciate the time you took to share your thoughts with me. Please feel free to contact my office in the future if I may be of assistance.
Sincerely,
Todd Akin Member of Congress ------------------------------------------------------------
I didn't ask for your apology, Fucker. I asked for you to get out of the race. If the primary were held tomorrow, you would lose.
This "will of the voters" line from both Akin and McCaskill is horse-shit. The MO Republican primary was considered by most to be a two way race between John Brunner and Sarah Steelman. Along comes McCaskill and her $1.5 million worth of ads for Akin. This, my friends, is more than his own campaign spent. And...voila, Akin pulls off the unlikely win.
While I will never understand why people are swayed by political advertising, I recognize that it's the reality. She gift-wrapped the nomination for him, but now pretends to be interested in the purity of the political process.
Did he really write "There is no rape that is legitimate"?
Yup. Unbelievable. I copied and pasted straight out of the email.
While I doubt he even wrote this email, come the fuck on.
Do you think he still doesn't understand exactly what this issue was? Because to me, "legitimate" meant "real." Does he think people mistook his word "legitimate" as "excused" or something? Someone needs to sit this man down and explain it like he's 5.
"Todd, your use of the word legitimate implies that not all rapes are REALLY rapes. Get it?"
To say nothing of the pseudo-science of "shutting that whole thing down."
Not that this excuses it, but I think what he meant was "there is no rape that is JUSTIFIED" - not legitimate. But you know, I'm a stickler for what words actually mean :/
