What kinds of food items do you stock up on when they're on sale? I'm trying to figure out what staples I should have on hand for cheap/easy meals so I can watch for sales. Some things I have in mind:
Diced tomatoes. We use those for two different kinds of chili, plus goulash and jambalaya. Pasta sauce. We like Hunt's in the can because it is usually $1 Eggs if you're up for eating frittatas or breakfast for dinner. Frozen potatoes. Fries or tater tots are a quick addition to bulk up any meal. We typically always have ground beef and chicken in the freezer. We also pick up Italian sausage when it's on sale or chicken sausage/brats.
We don't stock up per say on a lot because of lack of space but things we almost always have on hand, even if we buy them every week, are pasta, canned tomatoes, eggs, frozen breakfast sausage, frozen veggies, tuna, bread, string cheese, oatmeal, yogurt, cereal/granola bars, pretzels, cheese slices, deli meat, fresh veggies.
These aren't all dinner items necessarily but we do like to use breakfast/lunch items sometimes for a quick dinner and we both make our breakfast & lunch about 95% of the time. So all this stuff is running together in my head.
Usually I stock up on meats, mainly beef and chicken. Canned soups, canned tomatoes, dried pasta. Frozen meals, frozen veggies. Cheese. Canned beans. Flour, sugar and eggs too.
When I coupon I will try and stock up on rice and pasta sides.

Pasta, tomato sauce, frozen chicken breasts, those two-person Bertoli type meals (not great if you are watching sodium but can be cooked in <10 mins), cereal, frozen veggies, nuts, rice, etc.
bk1 when you shred the cheese, do you freeze some if you buy it in bulk? Or do you just buy what you'll be using?
I'll start by saying I'm kind of a horder... even with food...
I currently have 9 blocks of cheese in my fridge. I just shred them as needed. I don't ever shred extra because it will stick together. They stay good for months (unopened) and we go through it pretty fast. I only have that much because I got it on a good sale 3/$5.
-blocks of cheese. (I spread and freeze, I only buy mozzarella this way for when I make lasagnas, I make 10+ at a time and freeze, so I use a lot of cheese.)
-rice
-frozen veggies
-frozen fries/tator tots
-canned tomatoes (use this for making pasta sauces, just add a small amount of paste to thicken) (healthier and cheaper then buy pasta sauce.)
-tomato paste. (I use about 1/2 a can to make pasta sauce, I freeze the other half for future use.)
-spinach (I put it into the food processor with a small amount of water, once it's a paste consistency I freeze in ice cube trays, then put them into a ziplock bag. (I add 1-3 to meals when we don't have any veggies in the house.)
