DD is a brute with our devices and has cracked another iPad screen. I am thinking the kindle would be a better, more durable option for her as a device. The apps she likes are PBS and Disney jr for videos, and video touch, peekaboo barn, and palace pets for play.
Ant experience with making the switch? I also like the size much better for her than the full-size iPad and don't want to shell out the $$ for an iPad mini.

My kids love their Kindles. DS has had one since he was 2, and DD 5. We also have an iPad, but they don't use it much. The games are inexpensive or free, especially if you have prime. They can listen to audio books from my audible account too, which I like, since I can often get great books for $5 or less, like a collection of Beverly Cleary book (16 hours worth)! We have killed a few of them, but considering replacing the screen on our iPad is $200 alone, and their kindles are $120, not on sale, with extra memory, and last for 2-3 years (they killed the first set by using them while charging. I do not recommend that, but the newer ones have a good battery life), I am good with that. You can also get a kindle cover that has proven kid safe for us, for $10-$12. We like the 6" just fine, and I don't think the kid specific one is necessary, we put parental controls on for purchases and internet.
I don't have an ipod but will tell you the Kindle is awesome. Dd is a beast and hers has survived. She has the kid one. I think it's even covered against kid abuse where they will replace it within a period of time with no questions asked.
Thanks for the info! Follow up- how much storage do you think they need? Also, can I add pictures and videos from my iPhoto to it? DD also loves watching videos of the dog and looking at pictures, mostly of herself.

With the new kindles you can add memory with micro SD cards.

You can't get them on iCloud, but you can upload them and watch them. My kids make their own videos and take their own pictures. They can also watch You Tube videos, if I approve them.
