I'm a nurse. We don't get to take time off during holidays at all. I'll work one of the Christmas days and either Thanksgiving or black Friday or New Year's Eve or day.
I need to get into nursing management. They have time off!

I work for a college, we're closed for 2 weeks over Christmas/New Years for winter break and now have Weds-Friday off for Thanksgiving. It used to be just Thursday-Friday but they added Wednesday this year (last year it was a half day). My DH works for the state and gets Thursday-Friday off for Thanksgiving and just Christmas Day off usually...but he can take additional days off around Christmas, no issues. I think sometimes they give an additional day or half day for Christmas Eve.
At my job we had at calendar made in excel where everyone put down what they would like to take off.
Then my boss would look at it and ensure we had coverage while granting time off based on seniority.
This was all done by now though.
Basically this. We passed around a calendar in seniority order. First pass was either your required week or 5 days, one of which being by a holiday. I'm bottom of the totem pole but somehow I got wait listed for Christmas Eve so I might have it off! I haven't had it off in years!
I'm a nurse, so I have to work one of the two holidays, plus the day before or after every year. It definitely complicates splitting up the holidays with the two sides of the family.
H only gets Thanksgiving and Christmas Day off. He splits the surrounding days with his boss/the people he manages. This year, he's taking Black Friday off but working Christmas Eve.
